But it's not at all.
$999 = £737
But then we need to add VAT which is 20% so £884

However, the $999 price doesn't include sales tax in the US because it varies by state. If we take say a 6.5% sales tax as a decent median then the dollar price becomes $1069 which equates to £790.

So the difference in price between US and UK is £94
Compare the pre-tax prices: £832.50 vs £737 = £95.50, i.e. we pay 10% more than what Americans pay (excluding the different sales taxes).

Do they have these on display in Apple stores yet?

I've reserved an 8 plus on my upgrade program. But would like to compare the two in person first.

Highly unlikely they'll be in store until the pre-orders go up. Otherwise, the less clued up people will go in and see the 8 then the X and be like "Why would I get the 8, it's an old phone"

Figures already show that the anticipation for the X pre-orders has massively hurt 8 pre-orders. Apple were daft to do the two so far apart, production issues or not

I figured as much, its the price point of the X that puts me off really. But wanted to make an informed decision with both in hand ideally!

Are the 8's even out in stores on display?

Wouldn't expect the X on display until release of it.

Shame as I too want to get hands on with it prior to release, still can't justify the price but would love to see it in person

I suspect the notch is a design *choice*: not because they *had* to, but because they *wanted* to. They want the iPhone to be distinctive;

I totally agree with you. People are going to be able to spot an iPhone X a mile off (until the Samsung S9 is released :p).

I reckon wireless charging will help people like your missus and mine. Sprinkle a few charging mats around the house, which makes it dead easy to keep the battery topped up. Hence fast charging is less of an issue (it certainly is a non-issue for me -- I religiously charge my phone overnight, and very very rarely run out before bedtime).

This will be a good idea, but it will come down to how expensive these charge mats are, just leaving your phone lying on the coffee tables, beside the cooker etc is perfect as often it'll be sitting there anyway.

Does the 8 wireless charge? Or just the x?
What mats will be compatible? All existing ones, or have apple gone for their own gubbins?
Would a samsung wireless charger work for example, or be too powerful as it fast charges?

The 8, 8+ and X all have wireless charging, using the Qi standard. I just checked Amazon, and you can get them from £9, so it's pretty affordable! Any Qi charging mat will work, initially Apple are saying a maximum of 7.5W, so no wireless "fast charging" for now.

Yes what i was pondering is, if you have a fast charge capable mat, will it be too powerful for the apple device and lead to damage, or will the apple device only draw the charge it requires, thus any decent mat will do?

No, the standard is really cool. The device (iPhone) talks back to the mat and gives it the delta between what it would like (e.g. give me 5W) and what the mat is giving it (e.g. 2W). The mat will start at the minimum, and slowly ramp up until the delta reaches 0 (i.e. give me 5W, I'm giving you 5W). So there's no chance of the mat being too powerful.

Annoying that they have got rid of 128GB storage. My current 7 plus is 128Gb, and now im at the point where 64Gb will be too small, and 256Gb is far too big!

Am also struggling to find a reason that i want the X, i dont really like the notch in the screen, but the extra screen estate is good but screen estate is basically the same size as the Plus, but i like the idea of face ID, but im currently paying 44 a month, its going up to 51 so I can have the 256GB! then if i get the X thats £56 a month just for 64GB! The extra 12 a month doesn't warrant the Face ID and 0.3" of screen estate extra.

Also im not crazy about going back to a glass back again either!

You're like me. I have a 256GB 7+... 128GB would've been just right. 64GB is going to be tough... But I don;t really fancy paying £63 a month... even though it's only £13 more than I pay.. Hmm.

I must be one of the few that really aren't that bothered about the notch, maybe I'll change my mind but it honestly doesnt bother me currently.

My main gripes are the price of the X and the base model only being 64GB when imo it should have been 128GB.

Admittedly I've not used 64GB on my 128GB iPhone 7 yet, though I started storing more music locally on my phone I could probably easily hit that. However if I was to get an X long term another 128GB would have better, 256 is definitely overkill, as I dont want to get to a point where my habits change and I start running out storage and have to start deleting things or relying extremely heavy on the cloud. But for the price Apple should have really just replaced that 64GB base with 128GB.

Ah that is how the Qi works, excellent, that is nicely implemented.
So Qi 1 is your standard wireless, Qi 2 is the fast charge we see on most modern phones from samsung and the likes, and there is a Qi 3 on the way isn't there?
Superfast charge?

If they’d have gone with 128gb as the base, while I’m sure there will be people going for the 256gb option, the majority would have gone with the lower option.

Kinda similar with the 7 last year-everyone wanted a 64gb mid tier option and instead we got the 128gb.

It’s clever from Apple at the end of the day for the very reasons you specified-potential concerns about having to delete stuff = people go for the larger option.

iPhone X seems more like a proof of concept at this point than a real product, wondering if I can stick with my 6 plus for another year.

Probably wise to at least let the dust settle.
