*** The official late 2020 Mac mini thread (it has the M1 chip and everything!) ***

I'm sure nobody is surprised by the pricing. I think I'd rather buy an MX Keys and a second-hand watch Series 3 for auto-unlocking than fork out £179 for the full-sized keyboard.

I would get a watch if it functioned like touchID for password validation on the mac. Unlocking the mac is nice but most of the time I want touchID for entering my password and I can't do that because the macbook is docked and closed. I could go for a stand alone touchID button as well. One built into the magic touchpad would be great as well. Come on apple.

It’s been possible for a long time :D

Come on fez, keep up

What! Does it auto authenticate the password requirement for anything system related? I know it does login but I didn't think it did general system password entry where touchID or manual entry is the current option.

I'm not sure that touchID ever bypasses manual entry - For example, I've gone into system preferences, users, and clicked the padlock to unlock it. The only option I get there is manual password entry. TouchID isn't an option. If I open something that gives me the option of touchID, I also get the option to double click the button on my watch.

Cheers. I will have to have a look a the new watches in September in that case. Or maybe I will pick up this years on one of the crazy deals they always have just before the new ones come out.

Pops up with TouchID or Watch double tap when I've just tried the Security Preferences option, although Users definitely forces manual password entry (I'm assuming for additional security). There's likely a list on their support site, that I've yet to find, that says which options require manual entry instead of TouchID/Watch auth.

All the demos and reviews concentrate on this - It's fantastic at editing.

was just watching a video on this topic.. the poster said it was struggling with some codecs and flicking in Final Cut Pro unless he had 16GB model...

But Ram and SSD are soldered on? I really dislike not being able to upgrade or even replace faulty parts. I'd buy an M1 Mac if they were modular

Yeah, the more Apple make their stuff destined for eWaste the less I want to buy... they are designing in obsolescence and limited lifespan.... which is scummy IMHO

What are people using for large external storage?

Contemplating selling my PC to fund a Mac Mini for a home server, due to the great power consumption of the M1.

I'll be running Plex and NextCloud, so need a large storage option.
