*** The official M4 MacBook Pro thread (it has the M4 chip, 16Gb, AI and everything!) ***

I seldom use my iPad since getting my MBP - my daughter has taken it really and I don't miss it tbh.
Likewise, my son stole mine but I don't really miss the thing to be honest. To me it's just a phone with a bigger screen running IOS and not a "Proper Computer"!

Much prefer my laptop and wouldn't buy another iPad for myself personally.

I bought a 15" MacBook Pro in March 2009, I got my first iPad (a USA import) in April 2010 and a month later sold the MacBook. A year later I got the iPad 2 on launch day but after about six months it just got put aside and I've never really used an iPad since apart from as a shack clock and occasionally to watch TV from the office.

I'd much, much rather have a proper computer.

I’m looking to upgrade from my iPad Pro 11” to a MacBook. For some time I have been pondering about upgrading to a laptop rather than do everything on the ipad - the 11” screen is too small (I have a Magic Keyboard too (invoices/browsing/bit of photo editing) nothing very demanding.

In all honesty, I have no idea what to upgrade to? Air? M3 pro? The new basic m4 pro?

Either

M1 Air to save cash

M4 Air to get something a bit nicer and 16gb base RAM

I'll be looking to finally jump back in to a Macbook Pro after selling my intel based MBP and iMAC a few years ago. Still debating the fab form factor of the 14" or the extra real estate of the 16". Decisions decisions. This will be a laptop that I will use on the go so not planning to plug into external displays. Any opinions here?

14”. I have both and I use my 14” one more often. The 16” is lovely but it’s a lump and heavy.

Ended up selling my iPad Pro 11” 2022 and Magic Keyboard this afternoon for £560. Just put that towards the m4 14” pro. More than what Apple were offering (410) as a trade in so happy with that.

Trying to decide between 14/16".

I'd prefer the 14" size and would save some money. What are the downsides? Reduced battery life, fine. What about thermals? Any throttling with the 14 over the 16" (I'm talking historically). Louder fans? Is the resolution the same?

I got the 16" and regretted it since 2021. For me it's just unwieldy - comparison to my 14" work laptop which is perfectly fine. Zero issues with the 14" despite the work software handicap.

As mentioned above I have both and prefer the 14%. No downsides from performance, throttling, and what are fans? Never hear them on either.

What’s the best case for the pro ? Do you guys use a sleeve? Hard shell case? Naked?

The latter doesn’t sound very appealing to me :p

Depends what you use it for. You'd have to work the 14" pretty hard to get any sort of fan noise - I think I've heard mine once, and I'm still on the original M1.
