Are you going to buy the 2023 Mac Studio

The ports are a huge selling point on the Studio. I’ve only got the front USB ports free, everything else on the back is in use on mine.

Still rocking the M1 Ultra and still using about 5% of the capabilities.

Pretty much the same here. Having three monitors hooked up is great. One via HDMI and two via Thunderbolt to DisplayPort. Then I have two external SSDs and a couple of USB devices.

The M1 Max I have is pretty amazing machine although I am tempted by the M4 Max. I keep talking myself out of it though.

Same with my M1 Max. Ports are great, and the machine has been fantastic. I don't ever turned it off, I hardcoded the fan speed to lowest value so I don't ever hear it, it doesn't overheat, it's just been working perfectly.

Every year I'm like "I fancy one of these new ones" but then remember that this one does everything I need and probably will for another few years. I've always had two conditions for upgrades: 1) 50% more cores, and 2) each core to be 50% faster. M4 Max achieves this (50% more P cores vs M1 Max, each core is 65% faster), but still didn't see the point. Maybe I'll only do it when mine stops getting major macOS updates, but that's still quite a few years away.

Fantastic purchase overall.

I did look at the M2 Max but that was about the same price as the M4 Pro and the M2 Ultra which whilst appealing was about the same price as the M4 Max I went with.

I've not even considered mine, never even thought I fancy a new one! I went with the Ultra when I got it because I wanted the best and at the time, it was the best machine. When I eventually replace it, it will be the base spec version with the SSD upgraded. This one has the 2Tb SSD, I just like lots of internal storage.

But as you say, it's going to be a long time before these machines stop getting macOS updates.

I got the 1TB internal storage but I have 8TB of external SSDs attached. Still can't convince myself to pay Apple's upgrade prices for storage.

I have external storage as well but my 512GB internal storage is getting pretty close to full. There are just some things that are a pain in the arse to move to external drives.

Seriously considering replacing my desktop with a Mac Studio. Not sure how much difference there is between a Mini and a Studio though? I got an M4 MBA which is good enough for most things, but would like a little more been for running Unreal and stuff.

Go in between and the m4 pro mini? It was like £1299 on prime day.

I feel like it wouldn't be a huge uplift over my 24GB MBA, and I'd like to have the extra video engines, cooling etc. Need to work out how much my PC would be worth to justify it! I'd want the 48GB M4 Max spec with 1TB, so £2519. (will add external, but no point gimping the boot drive too much)

If you can make use of the power, go for it.

Look on the refurb store, I got my M4 Studio cheaper than the education store, got the 64GB and 1TB version.
