Due for release in the Autumn, Big Sur is the name of the next version of macOS. As predicted by Steve Jobs, OS X has lasted around twenty years and now they're moving on to version 11.0.

I might actually have a look at the public beta when it appears - I'll be running in in a VM as per you, @ChrisD. Does it have to be done as update to Catalina or can it be installed independently? I don't use Fusion so hopefully it'll work on Parallels.

I'm not sure about Parallels sorry, I used to run it but I get Fusion for free so that's what I use now.
You work for them now, don't you (or am I thinking of someone else)?

I'm a bit loathe to spend out on another virtualisation method but I can't help thinking Fusion would be better for me. Do they have the same annual upgrade cycle as Parallels or does it tend to go a bit longer between versions?

I see there's a 40% off deal for Parallels licence holders which runs out tonight. Having just been made redundant, I'm really unsure as whether to buy it. Persuade me! :D. (or send me a key, lol)

Any sign of the GM yet, surely this is heading for release next Tuesday?

I ran the early beta in a VM and it's the biggest change I've seen in an OS for many, many years. The VM wasn't a great experience generally so I only had a little play with it.

The biggest thing that struck me was the icon change, all icons are now a fixed square shape as per iOS. I'm going to miss the different shaped icons in my dock.

I have a fair bit of radio software that accesses my radio and interfaces via USB and the change in extensions regarding USB is a little concerning but it looks as though the drivers are baked into Big Sur so hopefully I'll be OK.

I am a little nervous about installing it straight away this year but I expect I'll be there straight away :)

I just had an email from Mike Bombich saying
  • We recommend waiting for a few updates before upgrading to Big Sur because important components of the OS aren't working yet
  • Early adopters can install macOS Big Sur onto the CCC backup volume to make it bootable.
And then lots of stuff as to why CCC isn't able to create a fully bootable backup yet. I do run CCC on a daily basis, it's one of my backup methods.

If I enrol my MacBook in the public beta program now, will that give the RC?

/edit - From reading Macrumors, it seems like it will.

It's slow downloading, very slow. It's not even reached 2Gb out of 12.1Gb yet and it's saying six hours to download. I'll just leave it running overnight.

Total failure on my 2017 i7 iMac. I've had multiple reboots, the progress bar just sticking and it going all kinds of wrong. I'm now restoring my CCC backup from last night and hoping I'll get Catalina back up and working.

I should be OK, the CCC backups are decent.

I wonder if the beta installer picked up the wrong version. When I ran it on my MacBook, I'm sure it said it was installing Big Sur but when I ran it on the iMac, it said Big Sur Beta. A friend also ran it today and his installed after a few attempts and then it offered another update to 11.0.1. My MacBook grabbed 11.0.1 straight away.

/edit - Yes, I'm back to Catalina. When I do a get info on the Big Sur install file it showed a creation date of September. That's very odd. Anyway, I won't be trying this again until the official release tomorrow.
