***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Just got my order and all I can say is :D

Edwin Jagger Double Edge Razor DE89L + 15 Derby Blades
30x Feather Hi-Stainless Double Edged Razor Blades
The Bluebeards Revenge Post Shave Balm (100ml)
The Bluebeards Revenge Luxury Shaving Cream (100ml)
Alum Block

"The" closest shave I have ever gotten. I feel like a baby, it's that smooth. The Bluebeards Revenge Shaving cream is amazing, it lathers up really quickly, and you hardly have to use any. The post shave balm is also great, just a small dab and it is enough to cover your face.

Why didn't I try this earlier, I do not know!

Well my Feathers arrived and I enjoyed my first shave with them. I managed to avoid doing a Sweeney todd on myself and escaped with just two tiny little nicks that I suspect were skin bumps or ingrown hairs so I'm happy.

I've gone back to basics with some MWF and whilst not the closest shave straight off the bat I am happy to focus on my form.

Wish I'd tried them sooner tbh

I've been shaving with DE for about 6 weeks now and I can feel a huge improvement over the electric shaver I was using. However I am finding I need to change blades every 1 to 2 shaves - does that fit with the average or am I going through them way too quickly?!

I was doing the same. Eventually a blade can easily last a week or more. You do feel a difference though when using a blade for this amount of time and then using a fresh new one.

I'm going to try the move from Gillette cartridges to a safety razor.

Obviously everyone is different, but is there a recommended starting point? A nice beginners kit? Which razor, blades, pre-shave oil, cream, and post-shave balm should I be looking at trying first?

Edit: really should have looked at the OP first. Still, other opinions are welcome if yours differ from Captain Planet's. :)

I started out with a small variety pack of blades, Murkur 34C HD, pot of Taylors Sandlewood and a Progress Vulfix 660 brush.

I use now Feather or Astra blades. Proraso (Green), I love the soothing feel this thing gives out. Still the same Murkur. I got 100 of each set of blades a year ago and are no way near using even half yet. I'm on my second set of Proraso. What pleases me most is I like shaving, I get a better result, no irritation and I save a small fortune. The only thing that saddens me is why I didn't switch sooner!

Whats everyones fav shaving creams right now?

Might go back to Oil as a pre shave to get the skin slicker, I liked the St James stuff of both, lovely smell, had a tube or Poraso Red I think it was okay.

Sandalwood Taylors I like for the smell and how easy it is to lather. I use Prorasso green though for its soothing feel. It's poo at lathering though.

Went for Taylor this time as its the last big brand for me to try, got the pre shave oil as well in the sandlewood range.

I find the Derby blades pretty good, along with Gillette 7 O'Clock Yellow. I bought one of the sample packs as you get a good selection of blades to try out.

So - I find myself rapidly running short of shaving soap and with £20.00 of credit on my Rainforest account.

I've tried:

  • Sandalwood - Taylors of Bond Street.
  • Arko - which I quite liked. (:o )
  • Mitchells Wool Fat.
  • St James of London - Cedarwood & Clarysage shaving soap.

Anything else the OcUK forumites would recommend?

Thanks for the replies guys and those that have posted in the thread already. :)

I've gone consistent and relatively conservative for my first foray into safety razors:

  • Merkur 34C
  • 60 blade sample pack
  • Sandalwood Taylor's of Old Bond St cream
  • Palmolive as a cheap alternative given the rave reviews for the price
  • Sandalwood ToOB pre-shave oil
  • ToOB Shaving Shop aftershave gel

Thought I'd stick with one recommended brand first to see how things went and I can always explore afterwards. I've already got a decent badger brush and Truefitt & Hill cream which I use with my ProGlide Power (which I feel gives a good shave as it is if done properly), but I'll open up the ToOB stuff for my first safety razor attempts.

I'll give it a go over the half term holidays (2 weeks time) as I don't fancy wandering into work looking like I'd been on a date with a bear over the weekend, and it will give my chopped-up face a chance to heal as I get used to it.

I'll report back in due course. :)
