***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Right, my new merkur 34c has arrived. My old one is still usable, albeit it doesn't unscrew properly so the head is hard to pull out. Does anyone want it free, just pay me postage? Maybe someone who wants to try DE out? Like I said, it works, it's just a little iffy taking apart... And I just know one day clumsy me would slip and slice my hand open.

I've somehow managed to bugger the thread on my 34c. It was so good I've straight away ordered a replacement. I was tempted to try something else but figured stick to what I know I like.

Well heres am update after the above post...

Still no joy getting a close shave for over a week now, I had tried different blades and exactly the same so I was at the point of giving up until my last chance saloon attempt tonight where I realised I had been putting the razor together the wrong way around as the base plate part was upside down!

Wow, what an amazing close shave Ive just had though and I only did 2 passes! Sadly my technique needs a bit of work as Ive cut myself in a few places but I am so impressed for my first "real" attempt!
Ha that's quite hilarious but also great that you found the culprit to your unsatisfactory shaves.

Good to hear about so many other people also getting great results from DE.

I don't agree, I get a better shave with my DE than I ever did with cartridge razors. The whole thing is just better, I always got razor rash on my neck and swapping completely stopped that, most times I get a baby smooth shave too.....am I just lucky?
I've been using DE for a few years now so maybe if I went back to cartridge with my current prep it would be better, not an experiment I can be bothered to try though.

Perhaps a combination of luck (favourable skin type), and good technique? I agree with you, I get a better shave from DE in all respects. I see no advantage to returning to cartridges. I shave every single working day ( :()

Soak your beard using a hot flannel first. Then use a brush to administer shave cream over your beard. This will soften the hair and skin sufficiently to make it easier to shave. Shave regularly so it isn't such a laborious task. You'll find doing this, whether with a mach 3 or DE, will reduce hair pull and irritation.

I must admit, it depends on how long I have left it between shaves. If I am shaving daily, I will moisturise otherwise my skin feels tight / dry. If I am waiting 3-4 days between shaves, usually my skin doesn't feel dry
You should moisturise everytime you shave and every time you wash your face. If you don't rehydrate your skin it will rehydrate itself by producing excess oil, which could be a reason for you getting unwanted spots.

Looks like an attempt to upscale prices for safety razors. They are coming back on trend - because with proper technique they give a better and cheaper shave than cartridges - and naturally someone is now trying to cash in on that. Charging at prices like $399 is just appealing to people who like to spend lots of money for the sake of it.
Exactly. Ridiculous pricing when you can get the same for much less..

No, waste of lather. I load the brush and then build the lather on my face.
I find that not to be true. I use a bean sized amount in a bowl, add a little water and whisk until up to a sizeable volume of creamy lather. When lathering directly on my face I find myself loading an unknown, often greater amount. I can make a tub last longer if lathering in a dedicated bowl.

Not sure if this is the right place but my son it turn 13 years old this May and is starting to get hair growth about his top lip, now I’m 43 and just use a beard trimmer so not wet shaved in years but I remember when I did it used to cause spot n pimples, same with an electric razor, is there anything model day I can use with him or just a straight wet shave!

I remember being embarrassed when I started to shave as I had a dark patch above my top lip but it’s a right of passage I suppose

Any advice would be great!
DE razor, it will prevent pimples.

Had first DE shave yesterday, and my second today (coming from an electric foil shaver) and found a couple of things:
1. I didn't bleed anywhere near as much as I thought I would - I was rather cautious the first time I used it, and was expecting to cut myself, but there was nothing more than if I use my foil shaver on the first shave, and more, but similar on my second shave. - I always get a bit of bleeding around the jawline, but I'm guessing that should improve with DE shaving, when I improve on the technique.
2. The handle on the shaver feels like it would be better a little longer, this might just take some getting used to, however.

I'm definitely sticking with it for the time being, hopefully my technique will improve, but even now, the shave feels better than it was with my electric, and I can very rarely manage 2 days in a row with the electric shaver due to irritation, but there was very little issue with the DE.

I bought the sample pack of blades, and initially I've used the Derby Extra blades (and I plan to try the others as I change blades), and I've done both first shaves with the same blade. I know they're best being replaced fairly regularly, but is this normally every 1-2 shaves, or are we talking 4-5 normally?

The handle is short, hold it in a kind of balanced position between your index finger and thumb, nothing else. Then allow the weight of the razor to do the work against your face. This will mean no cuts and less irritation. Proceed to do three passes WTG, XTG, ATG.

I, like many, recommend feather blades. Replace them every other shave. They're so cheap (compared to cartridge razors), you might as well aim for the best shave every time and do that.

The handle length I found made it hard to hold comfortably, and I ended up with cramp in my hand by the end, but I'm hoping this improves with time.

There are some feathers in the sample pack I bought, and I read they were meant to be some of the sharpest. I intend to try them, but I was planning on trying them after a while of getting used to the technique, so I don't rip my face to pieces too much!
If it's giving you cramp then I suggest you're gripping it too tight (wahey). Like I said, release the whole handle from your hands and JUST hold it between the tips of your index finger and your thumb. Hold it out in front of you and balance it there. This is how you should hold it to your face, without pincer pressure, just let it fall against your face.

Am i accepted here?
