****The Official Mountain Bicycle Gallery Thread****

Could anyone take a look at this and confirm that it may be suitable?

or
The same one but on a BF sale: https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/sram-nx-eagle-12-speed-mountain-bike-groupset/rp-prod172474

I have been looking for availability on 11 speed sets and literally nothing is in stock but plenty of 12 speed. The features appear to be good and a lot carried over from the higher end of the SRAM range similar to what Shimano do with XTR >>> Deore/SLX.

Just want to know if there's anything I am missing other than that groupset bundle. I won't be buying right now of course, after the new year but want to have a set i mind.

For ref, current groupset is a Shimano Altus 2x8

Worth also noting that the NX uses a standard freehub fitment so from what I can see based on teh above, is compatible with my bike.

Cheers!

It's the width of the rear dropouts. If you have a QR rear wheel it'll be standard 135mm non boost.

Bolt through standard is 142mm.

Boost is 148mm so the cassette site further out from the centre like of the bike requiring the chain ring to sit further out to fix the chain line.

Ah the dropouts is listed on the spec sheet
"135mm Forged Dropouts"

So looks like the non boost is the one to go for then.

Local shop just emailed me back, they reckon £50-£60 to fit the groupset and that includes a bike service too as I think I have sand/gravel in my rear hub as the pawl bits can be heard grinding on what sound like sand rubbing when free wheeling at walking pace. I have had mud and dirt all over it last few rides so these could do with a clean out I guess.

Aye non boost for that then. Marin did do a weird boost 141mm QR on the pine mountain model a few years back. That was a pain in the arse.

The freehub probabaly isn't serviceable but can replaced as a whole unit.

Higher end wheels you can slide the freehub off and clean out the pawls. Factory wheels usually have a different setup.

This isn't serviceable

Ah that's a bummer, but for the sake of £8, happy to just chuck in a new free hub

Ok gonna get the SRAM set ordered and book the bike in :D

I think that will sort me out for a while at least anyway now, plus easier maintenance with no front mech and one less cable clutter.

Where do people sell old MTB components? I will have no need for the Altus set any more so may as well have it go to someone.

Cheers!

You missed an s at the end of that link :D But looks like Marin ones are £20, not too bad really!

Edit*
Although none of those freehubs listed show my model in their will fit tables :/

I shall do that cheers. It could also be the bearings too so will hold off on the freehub order until bike shop have taken a look and confirmed. I can then order whatever is needed.

Edit*

SRAM NX Eagle groupset ordered

I saw that the big benefit with this is that everything in the Eagle range is cross compatible, so in future if I want a lighter crank or chain or want more adjustment on the shifter, I can just get the X01/GX parts and swap out. Chain is most likely the only upgrade I will do though depending on how good the NX chain is. The X01 chain is much smoother going by reviews so quieter too but I'm not prepared to drop £50 on a chain any time soon :o

A new bottom bracket was the only extra item that was needed for the groupset swap. Nukeproof Horizon added to the basket.

It's here!

The gearing range difference isn't too huge either from what I had most especially in the climbing gear, whilst the smallest rear cog on the 36T can eek out a few more mph on the long straight it's not a huge loss.

Now to find out if my rear hub will take the cassette, Chain Reaction Cycles made no mention of it and I only realised after the order so will let the bike shop see if there are spacers in there already that can be removed to accommodate the new set else I'll need a new hub/wheel.

Yeah they are huge, they had to redesign them as the first gear would fold on some early cassettes.

If you look at the back of the cassette it should be like a bowl so that the bigger cogs sit almost into the wheel, beyond the face of the hub, as they are so large.

Ah yes there is a bit of a dish there so that all makes sense. Dropping it off Friday so providing there are no snags, should have it back some point next week ready for the weekend!

Only a quick ride home but have to say the SRAM shifter is brilliant, my finger still reaches for the index finger trigger lol but I'll get used to it. Love the rapid click going up a gear, and being able to drop down 4 gears in one go is really handy. There's no chain slap jumping off high pavements now like the Altus used to have and everything is near instant in response. Love how it looks now too from a side profile, especially with the when the chain is on the large sprocket :D - Will take a pic during the daytime.

Consider me a SRAM convert.

Also can I just say how amazingly helpful Chain Reaction Cycles have been? Not only for my bike tips and recommendations but also a mate's one too. I will definitely be doing bike related business with them in the first instance from now on.
