First one, they stay open but minimised. If you want to close the app fully then press CMD + Q. (Apple + Q)

For the second one, do you have more than one user account on your Mac?

Boot off your OS X disc by holding C when you start the Mac.

Run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, and repair disk permissions. That may take 2-5 minutes depending on the state of the drive, but it will allow you to check if the drive is screwed (SMART status etc etc).

If this doesn't work, you may have to try resetting the master password (also from the OS X cd {on boot}) and trying the updates again. If that fails.. reformat.

Not really. You need to boot off the CD to perform the maintenance on the HDD.

You could try running the Disk Utility from Applications > Disk Utility and running it from the normal OS, however I cannot garauntee it would as effectively.

My mac arrive next week, just a couple of things im wondering.

Q: Do i have to reformat my iPod to work with the Mac?

Q: When setting the iMac up initally, and it comes to the option if I want to tranferr stuff from an older computer, is it easy enough to come back to this when im ready to start moving files (mp3/ video etc), over?.

Q: Im getting an external 500Gb HDD with it, I assume it best to format this on the Mac, but can i connect it to the Pc to allow me to move/ store stuff to use on my Mac?

Thanks.

1. It'll work fine straight away (FAT32, as it's formatted, is read/write on Mac OS X), but if you want to update the software on it on Mac OS X you'll need to restore it which'll format it to HFS+ (the Mac file system) :)

2. Yeah fine. I never trust a computer to do things like that anyway :D

3. You have a couple of options here depending on what you want to do...

Transfering stuff to your iMac and then using it exclusively with the iMac: Leave it formatted FAT32, copy stuff from your PC to Mac using it, format HFS+, copy stuff back.

Transfering stuff between your PC and iMac continuously: leave as FAT32.

As a side not if you're wanting to use Time Machine with it then you'll have to have it formatted as HFS+.

Hmm I may just backup ,my music and lift it over on the HD and drop it all back into iTunes for the sake of being long term easier.

WIll format the HDD on the Mac, drag all my stuff from the Pc to it, then put what I need where I need it (as i learn the Mac) then format it to HFS+ (what does that file format mean, or is it just a mac thing?)

Think ill just have it as space for Vid etc, thinking of one of them Time Machine wirless thingys...they look the mutts nutts lol.

Ohh and thanks for the help.
