I just bought a "travel" controller from Aliexpress for £15. Hall effects, it even has L3/R3 click on the sticks. No analogue shoulders but I can forgive that for its compact size with sticks.
Should be good as my travel controller.

Do you think a screen protector is needed as I will be plainly in mainly docked mode?

I'm in the same position but ordered one anyway as the docking mechanism feels extremely wobbly as the switch itself sorts of sits rather than "plugs" in to the dock.
Mine rarely leaves the dock but the OG Switch had issues with the dock scratching the screen for quite a lot of people. I would stick one on just in case. They are dirt cheap and with the good ones you get an "applicator" that makes it utterly trivial to install. It was worth £5 just to watch it slowly apply itself over the whole screen after you press down just the middle of it.
Rule of thumb for me for any portable device

I ordered one about 2 mins ago from somewhere I can't mention - as it got starred out! Could have paid for a Saturday delivery, but have just gone with the standard - so should be here on Tuesday.
