*** The Official Nintendo Switch 2 ***

The more I read about it the more I'm glad I picked up a pre-order when I did.

I would have pre-ordered earlier, but even with 5 years of NSO online Nintendo UK didn't let me pre-order. And then Amazon let me down too with their short lived pre-registration. I was prepared to not have one at launch. So it's a nice surprise to bag one anyway.

I did have a gut feeling these wouldn't be that hard to pick up after launch though, but we'll see if that is the case or not.

Will the original joycons work with the Switch 2?

I’ve got 2 Switch 2’s on pre-order. One for me, and one for my sons birthday in August (just in case there is a shortage - although it doesn’t look like that’ll be the case).

I don’t want to order a second set of joycons knowing I’ll have the second Switch 2 hiding away… so wondered if I could still play Mario Kart with 4 players using original Switch joycons?

The OG joycons are smaller and have a different locking mechanism so they can't attach to the new console. Also, the old joycons are missing certain functions eg. the "C" button. But they may work remotely/wirelessly, similar to the old Switch Pro controller. Not sure, but I'd speculate that's likely true.

Just looking for basic functionality when the device is docked, so I can play 4 players without having to buy more controllers. If we’re all sitting in front of the same TV, we won’t need the C button anyway.

So, I have given my OG Switch, together with Mario Kart Deluxe 8 to my niece, but it has my profile still installed because I have Overcooked on there and they love playing that game.

I don't mind it, but I am going to use the same login and profile on the Switch 2, will that work?

That may cause issues, unless you get the NSO family subscription so you can share your profile/games.

We won't play games at the same time. Certainly not the same games. I kept my Zelda and Mario cartridges for myself.
You can only have one primary device per account. Secondary devices can still be linked to your account but they will have restricted usage and require an online connection. It's complicated - you probably should read the Nintendo support page for all the ins and outs.

It seems to let me do what I want, being online is not a problem. They only ever play it at home.

What I don't understand is this bit...

Allow other users to play your downloaded content, online or offline

Not sure what it means by "other users", since it is going to be my log in for both consoles.

I think that's just secondary user accounts on the console. On the primary console other accounts can access any games installed on the Switch. I don't know if that's true of users that are just local accounts, or linked to another Nintendo profile.

Links Awakening is great. There is some random stutter when you exit to the outside world so I am hoping this will fix that at least. It’s classic old school Zelda with shiny new graphics if you like the older games.

Its hard to say because some of the above games mention frame rate and the Zelda games don't so I'm not sure if they consider those occasional frame rate drops not an issue that needs fixing because they will be compensated for by the hardware and aren't common or if they will still be there. Time will tell.
