*** The Official Nintendo Switch 2 ***

I had well enough in CEX vouchers to grab a £395 NS2 technically free of charge, delivered on 5th July. That was exactly 1 month after launch so that wasn't too shabby. It periodically goes out of stock, but it is currently in stock at the time of writing this.

I have tested some NS1 Mario titles and they all worked fine after Nintendo downloaded small patches for some of them. The graphics are fairly crisp, but not sure if that's the NS2's doing or if the telly is upscaling or if it's a combination of both.

I've still got enough CEX credit to buy an NS2 Pro controller and several NS2 games, although my concern is that Nintendo are reportedly bricking / banning NS2s for using 2nd hand cartridges. So I will hold my horses until I know for definite on what exact grounds Nintendo are banning their consoles.

The new Mario Kart isn't a priority for me. I'm waiting for the next Mario platformer, and I hope that Galaxy 2 gets a port like Galaxy 1 did.

Is there a source for that? I haven't read a single thing about bricked consoles anywhere for using 2nd hand games. Folk using those mig-switch things that can hold backups though yes I have seen those being bricked.

There is no source cause it's not true, no systems are bricked for using legitimate cartridge games, it's only using that mig cartridge that is used for pirating that gets banned

Apologies - I should have given a source. It was from the Metro newspaper. On my phone, I get frequent (several times daily) news alerts from Google, mostly about the NS2, but also a lot about the DWP! When I tap on the links, they normally take me to the BBC but this one was the Metro. They open up in Firefox, so I was able to find it via CTRL-H on desktop just now as they share the same history.

Read the link, piracy related. They bought used cartridges that the original purchaser coped and continued to use.

Nintendo didn’t know who had the original other than both were in use at the same time and presumably both were banned.

I'm going to have to sift through my 18 NS1 titles then. Pretty sure that at least 16 of them were brand new off Amazon then the other 1 or 2 were off eBay. The eBay'd carts come in cases and have what seems like the official artwork printed on them. If they were copied, then presumably the copied carts won't have the artwork on them and probably look just like plain SD cards?

Edit: some of my carts rattle! You shake them and there is something loose inside but they still work fine. The ones that rattle were all 1st hand.

And this is another reason why I prefer digital only. I certainly wouldn’t like to take a 50/50 chance on whether that game was dumped or not. Way too much risk to have my console essentially bricked to save a few quid.

Not only is the cartridge slower at loading than internal storage or even a Micro SD Express card, which is ridiculous, I can’t lose a digital copy, have it stolen or damaged, no physical space being used, and no hassle bringing all my cartridges along, which I need to constantly insert and remove.

And to top it off with Nintendo using physical cartridges for digital-only games, I’d have to insert that just to play a digital-only copy each time, which is absolutely stupid. I can't see physically media making it to the next generation of consoles, if not the next ones definitely the ones after that. For us PC gamers, we ditched physical many years ago and we are doing just fine.

It's probably closer to a 1/1000 chance, especially if buying from a reputable source. There would nearly always be obvious signs of a fake on inspection of the cart too, and you could give it a lick! :p - real switch carts have a bitter taste.

The 'victim' in that article didn't buy from a reputable source and it was a Switch 1 game, and Nintendo did unban them. I think it's unlikely to be a common issue with Switch 2 - the hardware bans Nintendo issue are more to target people who pirate 'privately' for themselves.

I do like the convenience of digital, but I buy most games physical these days since I don't collect and don't replay games typically. I'll be binging DK and selling it before long.

The issue wasn’t fake carts, the person had a legitimate cart.

The issue was they bought a used cart which the previous owner had dumped and was continuing to use it on a jailbroken switch (effectively pirated the game).

Think about how ‘back in the day’ people rented DVDs from love film or Netflix and dumped them to their hard drive or copied them and sent the original back to the rental company and watched it at a later date.

Legitimate carts rattle, that’s normal.

Oh it was a real one dumped prior to sale, that makes things more interesting!

Perhaps this won't be much of an issue for Switch 2 games anyway, at least for now.

Contemplating Civ6, as it is on offer for a fiver on the eStore, plus another tenner for the SW2 update (I know it is free with the NSO membership).

Anyone played it via the S2 version? How do the mouse controls feel?

I read somewhere that the owner of the original cartridge was able to prove they had the original to Nintendo and have their Switch 2 ‘unbanned’. Not sure if there was any truth in that.

I have a handful of games I’ve picked up off eBay second hand for relatively cheap - so I hope none of them have been ‘backed up’ before selling them on!

Civ 6 doesn't have a Switch 2 version - Civ 7 is on offer for £42.49 + £10.00 for the Switch 2 version though

Finished Echos of Wisdom on the Switch 2, a very pleasant surprise. I choose to miss it on the switch 1 as it didn't look very appealing to me and people were complaining about the performance on the switch 1, I also remember the distracting depth of field blur in Links Awaking. Happy to say the Switch 2 patch solved all of this and the art style cleans up well in 4k and Echos of Wisdom game play itself was a lot of fun, only issue is I thought the music was a bit weak for a Zelda game.

I still have Echoes of Wisdom left to play. I'm swimming in a backlog of games at the moment though :D.
