**** The Official Note 4 thread ****

It's a USB device that sits between the charger and the cable for the phone. Has a little LED backlit display that shows the voltage,current, mAh of the charge and the charge time.

Its great for working out if you are getting proper fast charge from different chargers, and car units, etc. You can also use it to test the mAh output of power banks.
 
I use these power meters and check the capacity of all my batteries. The OEM Samsung batteries have all been within 1% of the stated capacity when using the Samsung external battery charger case. Charging the same battery in the phone (switched off) measures around 6% less than that in the charger case.

Other batteries I've tested that match the Samsung for capacity have been the Anker and RAVPower.
 
Interesting update with mine. The previous ROM was a little too buggy and missing some newer features found in later versions of Samsung's UX, so I went back to Dr Ketan's ROM and put back the new battery I recently purchased (Rav Power). I have lost 14% this morning with 53 minutes of SoT, quite please with that. For anyone that doesn't know this ROM, I highly recommend it!

I am demoting my N4 to my spare phone (e.g. for parties with BT speakers) but going to give it a dbrand treatment when I get my N8 :D

Edit - 50% with 2.5 hours SoT. That's more like it :) - bet it won't last long.

I think I am on to something. My initial success with the battery was short lived, it only seemed to get that after the installation of the ROM. As soon as I updated everything, it was back to its usual faster than usual drain. I am going to reset one more time before my Note 8 arrives to confirm.
 
Can i ask what roms everyone are using? I'm personally running the echomm rom for a while, but just wondering what else i might be missing. I've not run stock for a while, just wondering how long before we start to see note 8 ports. I prefer a nice responsive phone with everything working though
 
Reckon we will see Note 8 ports? Get the feeling XDA love for the Note 4 is waning a little.

I am using De Ketan's ROM which I absolutely love, not used Echo for a while so unsure how they differ feature wise. However it brings quite a few useful features from future Notes to the 4 (make notes on a locked screen, interactive toggles in the notification panel so you don't have to jump into that specific settings to e.g. connect to a WiFi network, AOD though this screams battery drain especially with my on-going troubles, a bunch of other tweaks and runs like a dream).
 
After the regular monthly OTA updates through 2017 it looks like the update in early September with the 1 August security patch was the last one which coincides with 3 years since the Note 4 global release date (October 2014), so no Krack fix likely.


Edit: Just noticed that the option to reinitialise the firmware has been removed from Smart Switch. However the option is available in the latest version of Kies3.

Edit2: Official confirmation that the Note 4 isn't on the Monthly or Quarterly Security Update schedule.

The screens starting to lift on mine on one side. Brilliant phone still.

Really don't want to have to shell out for a Note 8 for 2 years but can't see another viable alternative.
 
Sold mine few weeks ago. Still holds it's own today, especially with the replaceable battery. But decided on the Note 8, dual camera and portrait style photos are really a big improvement. Being waterproof is handy too. Still miss the size/shape of the Note 4 though, just seemed right to me.
 
Anyone had their Note 4 develop issues? I don't know if my phone is faulty or if it's finally on its last legs.

Often randomly restarts, even when charged.
can take an age to load up,
unresponsive, lagging,
camera will sometimes continuous focus,
I've had moments when the phone refuses to charge,
moments when the phone will literally not turn back on

I've removed most apps from the phone and taken it all the way back down to TouchWiz to try and see if it helps. I've got two batteries and both have issues. I'm getting a replacement for one sent out to see if it helps. Is it time for a new phone? :(
 
random restarts are normally either the battery or the eMMC is failing. if it's the later then you need a new motherboard.

Keep it till it dies. If there's nothing wrong with the screen, sealing kits cost nothing and it's not difficult to remove the screen and reseal them on the note 4.

I fear it may be the motherboard then, considering two batteries perform the same way. I'll give this next replacement battery a try before deciding to buy a new phone. It's lasted me well, so can't complain too much.
 
Install Wake Lock and use setting 4, PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK. If that appears to fix it then it's likely the eMMC problem. Wake Lock won't fix it but you might get a bit more use out of it. Try to avoid restarting the phone if possible.

What might this help with? Stopping the phone from restarting randomly? Yeah I'm a little worried about turning my phone off most days, so mostly always make sure to stick it on charge before it goes. Have downloaded the app and will see how it goes, cheers.
 
Mine very occasionally restarts of its own accord (don't think its intentional - if I happen to be using it it goes super laggy then reboots) - performance frequently slows down now as well - not all the time but at least once a week - its fairly clean of bloatware, etc. so not that.

I'm wondering if the eMMC has the same issue as the 840 Evo did with cell electrical signal calibration where it drifts out of expected parameters over time becoming harder and harder to read unless the data is rewritten - critical OS stuff related to booting, etc. being some of the oldest data and unlikely to ever get rewritten even with a completely new ROM flashed on there, etc. if so that is pretty disgusting.

Still not sure what to replace my Note 4 with - not seeing much that ticks all the boxes - the Sony Xperias are close but non-removable battery and nano SIM (though not a big deal but my current one is micro) make them a no unfortunately.
