*** The Official OcUK Eurovision 2023 GD thread ***

I think the first thing to remember is this isn’t a music competition, it’s a geo political love fest.

If it were a music competition one would have to be very concerned about the dire levels of euro trash music involved and whilst the winner may not fall heavily into that category the song that nearly won (came second) very much did so again it’s……..

Hell what am I saying….. welcome to NATO Sweden and Finland!!

It partly is, that's why the Jury went heavily for Sweden as they mentioned at the end next year will be 50 years of ABBA.

None of the audience votes gave Sweden 12 points as far as I can tell.

isn't a music competition - just a pity x-factor/talent/voice aren't also once a year -

but didn't understand why Ukraine song didn't have a more obvious political content - they'd have won (again) - an opportunity missed.
enough anti-nazi songs from 2nd WW, so, something similar.

I think if it was purely political rather than just wanting it in Sweden for the ABBA anniversary then the jury top three wouldn't have been Sweden, Italy, Israel.

Huh? The entire song was about the defence Ukraine put up at the steel mill....

My top 3 favourite entries were Australia, Finland and Norway. Gutted that Oz didn't reach near the top of the leadership board, but glad that Finland got to no.2.

What was the politics behind Sweden though? A lot of the juries gave them max (12) points. I think there were some politics behind Israel too.

At the end they said 'ooh how lovely it'll be in Sweden next year for ABBAs 50th anniversary'. That's why the Jury votes were the way they were.

I don't think there was an abnormal amount of politics behind it; it was more that what the Juries look for tends to be different. Specifically the Juries are more likely to reward technical skills than the public. Tedious as it was, she could sing; and displayed a better range of technical skill than most performers.

Why she also came second in the public vote I have no idea.

Cheers @adidan and @Mr Jack

I didn't think about technical skill, but I certainly paid attention to the production value of the Eurovision set, as I have a keen interest in club lighting. I liked that the stage floor lit up as a huge LCD panel, which has been a feature of Eurovision for several years now but it seems to get better every year as the technology improves.

If I was rewarding points on production value, they would have gone to Poland ("boxxy" tropical wall washes), Serbia with their blue cyberpunk theme, Cyprus for the realistic water effect, and Armenia for the raised LCD "island" thing in the middle of the stage. It was all really good though.

One thing that does surprise me though is that there are no lasers on the Eurovision set. They can produce some dramatic effects and they often full colour these days, not just green or RGB. I know this because I went to a club in Nottingham 2 weeks ago that had full colour lasers that produced prismatic / spectrum effects.
