*** The Official OcUK Eurovision 2024 GD thread ***

The more I listen to Croatia's song, the more I feel it should have won :D

It's a classic case of the contrast between the panel and public votes. The panel like singers that demonstrate technical skill, and usually favour single performers over more ensemble affairs; the public likes interesting tracks and catchy tunes. Croatia was very well suited for the latter, but not great for the former.

It won the public vote. The Swiss song came 3rd if you take out the pitty votes.

It didn't win the public vote.
There was a streaking away winner of the public vote.
I still can't fathom how that song actually managed to win the public vote.
I still there some dodgy voting using state sponsored phone numbers or similar has occurred.

Malta has been temporarily banned from Eurovision 2025 because of its song title that sounds like the c word. I just watched the singer being interviewed on Newsnight saying it means singing in Maltese. The hook line of the chorus means 'serving singing'. Obviously though, she and the song writers knew it would provoke reaction and be publicity for her. I won't link the video but it's on YouTube.

This is also why Big Country were never allowed to compete in Eurovision, despite being one of the top bands of their age.

edit: best not include the Big Country member Mark Lamarr joke youtube clip on second thoughts.
