** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

It's interesting because Filco (which is the board i have decided on) only seems to come in Black, Blue, or Brown varieties
While you may end up with the right keyboard, I'm not sure you should decide on brand before choosing which key you like. I like the look of the Filco, but if I was after a black and Filco didn't make black, I'd buy a Steelseries rather than have a Filco with the wrong keys. Equally, if I knew I wanted reds, I'd be looking at the Qpad MK85 and Corsair keyboards.

I do a lot of typing and I find cherry reds to be great to be honest. If anything the low attenuation force required to type on them really helps with my typing speed. I don't have issues with accidentally pressing keys but I'm a reasonably proficient touch typist so perhaps if you weren't it would be more of an issue.

I wanted Reds but went for a Filco with browns after talking with a few people. I'm glad I did, reds would have been far too light for me. I find the Browns very light especially coming from a G15.

Obviously down to user preference but I don't think you can go wrong with browns, especially if you are unsure.

I also found that once i got used to the reds that my typing speed improved, I am also a touch typist and I haven't had any issues with hitting the wrong keys. You can't really rest your fingers on the keys without triggering them though, so if you want to use reds, I'd suggest that is a habit you should get rid of ...or use different switches. I imagine that you would have the same problem with the browns though, although I haven't touched a board with browns in years so I'm not really sure.

Blues, browns and reds use the same spring so in theory should have the same "weight", the diffrence in tactility might make it feel different though.

Thought they were lighter. Don't really feel the bump so they must feel pretty much the same then?
I took the info from Oblivion's quote above (think I've read similar before). You might miss the bump if typing hard, otherwise you'll feel it. And the bump should mean it takes more force to activate than the reds.

The illumination on the caps and num locks indicators are a tad bright.

Same on the 80 if I'm going to be honest about the situation. With all the other keys having 4 levels to choose from you'd think adding those three would be a no brainer.

I'm very much torn between red or black switches...I don't do much typing, mostly gaming on my pc, hence why browns aren't on my list.

What sort of force is used to press on a standard rubber dome, in comparison to black/red Cherry switches? I see plenty of posts mentioning blacks are 80g and reds 55g, but have no idea how that compares to my standard Microsoft keyboard...

I have just made the jump from a 'normal' keyboard (Microsoft Reclusa) to cherry blacks, as per my post. I have just tried them side by side and it is very hard to say to what extent they differ in force. There is no doubt that the cherry switches take more force to press, but on the flipside, they are so much smoother. They glide down, when my old keyboard now feels like there is sandpaper inside. You would never notice it until you try it. My old keyboard just feels totally inferior now. Squidgy and a little rough, rather than smooth and clicky.

I have gamed on a it a fair bit now and have had no finger fatigue at all, which has been reported by a few.

By contrast to that, the red switches take a noticeable amount less force to press than a typical rubber dome keyboard.

if you tend to hammer your keys, you'll probably be better of with black, if you are a light touch, then red. Having said that, using reds might stop you hammering the keys after a while ...it's an entirely personal choice that no one can make for you.

I ordered a UK Filco Majestouch 2 with Brown switches. This will be my first mechanical keyboard for 8 years. It brings back some memories, really really liking it.

So glad I bought the wrist rest too.

I can remember reading (not too sure if it was this thread) that there was a place where you could buy small o-rings for the keys so when you bottom them out it doesn't make much of a noise.

Any idea what their name is so I could find/order some?

Not sure if you can get any within the UK but I know WASD keyboards in the US sells them. Probably wouldn't get charged much to ship them over seeing as they're so small.
