***The Official Q6600 Overclocking Thread ***

the ram is running 1:1 2.1v at 6 - 6 - 6 - 18
Not that this will effect your overclock but I have that ram running at sync 1:1, 400MHz DDR2-800, 4-4-4-12 @1.8vDimm

temps are hitting 70 with all 4 cores loaded, seems a bit high...
Yes it does, not a show-stopper by any means but there is scope for improvement.

If i increase the vcore is it going to raise the temperatures a lot ?
the more you add the higher the temps will go kinda, depends a lot on your cooling but if the chip is already running hot I wouldn't be in a rush to juice it even more.

Well after flashing my mobo BIOS upto 0906 i've managed to get 3.5Ghz stable :D

3.5Ghz @ 438x8 @ 1.425V (1.408V under load)

Did a good hour of prime last night with no problem whereas before it would bomb out after a couple of mins on the 0503 BIOS.

Only things stopping me getting 3.6Ghz now is temps.

I can get into windows at 3.6Ghz 400x9 on 1.5V, and it is prime stable until the point the chip hits 72C, at that exact point every time the system hard resets. Up until that point prime works like a champ.

So i'm down to my last resort for 3.6 of lapping the CPU, or strapping a bigger fan on the TRUE :D I'm currently using the fan from my old Scythe Ninja+.

Which would be better, the Scythe Ninja fan or an Akasa Amber? As I have an Akasa as my exahust fan, I could always swap them over if it were likely to cool the CPU better...

Well i have put it back to 9 now, and running 333mhz fsb which is giving me 3ghz, the ram is running 1:1 2.1v at 6 - 6 - 6 - 18, temps are hitting 70 with all 4 cores loaded, seems a bit high...

If i increase the vcore is it going to raise the temperatures a lot ?

Well it ran like that for 12 hours last nite without crashing, so i assume thats resonably stable, i used 2 instances of orthos to test it with each instance loaded onto 2 cores.

Mite try lowering the voltage on the ram, as there obviously is no need running it at that voltage when your getting away with 1.8v.

After stopping orthos this morning its now idling at about 57, seems a bit toasty for me like, but my room is quite hot i guess.

yea i dropped the voltage, cant find the timings in the bios tho, but i know ive seen them before so will have a look around, does anyone know if one of them Thermalright Ultra-120A CPU Cooler's will fit on my motherboard alright ? cos im thinking of ordering one if they will.

Its in the chipset page but they won't appear until you take them off *auto*

Yup Fine. . .

what 120mm fan do you recommend for it ?
Its horses for courses, do you want silence? do you want power? do you want looks? its a personal thing, pros and cons always. I was happy with the AKASA ambers but the fan-addicts would say different. I switched to Sharkoon Silent Eagles about a year ago and I like them, the 120MM SE 1000 is very quiet for me yet gives off enough airflow to cool an overclocked dual or quad core when used with the TRU, it also looks nice (to me) and the cables is pre-sheathed so no horrid wires. I am using the Blue LED Silent Eagle a lot at the moment! :o

Silverstone FM-122

Can't say it enough! You get a fan controller with each fan which can be mounted in the floppy drive hole. On low its SO quiet, and at high it pushes near 100CFM. Got 3 on my radiator and they're good for daytime and nighttime use when I want to sleep !

Finally had a little time to overclock my quad today, 1st target was a modest 3.6Ghz.

Happy with the results so far, it really doesn’t need much vcore to get it prime stable! just 1.28v (1.31v in bios). My old E6600 needed 1.45v to run the same frequency! :)

My watercooling is doing a great job of cooling load temps also, will keep prime running for a bit longer and then push some more!

Now priming at 3.8Ghz, and still under 1.4vcore  temps up by 7-8 degrees though.

Noticed at some points the psu's 12v rail dips under 11.8volts, dmm meter also confirms the dip. The more vcore I run the more it dips
5 and 3.3v rails are rock solid, just not really sure what amount is acceptable on the 12v rail.
This psu has two 20a rails that you can combine together to make one single high current 12v rail, anyone think it’s worth doing?

3800MHz, 1.376vCore and 38°C Full Small FFTs load?, Seems very good to me :)

Is there anything *special* about those temps? like did you put icecubes in the water cooling or stick your machine in the north pole? :D

Is that a retail chip or OEM Hesky? I notice it had a nice VID of 1.2125v cool!

i wanted silence mostly and the best cfm for the lowest decibels, went for , hope i made the right choice lol, the sharkoons were close but i sleep not far from my pc and the less noise the better.

A good open air fan may not be the best choice on a HSF or rad.

Take a look at this fan review.

I've just built an external radbox, tried a half dozen different fans. Went with three Yate Loon for low CFM and three Sanyo Denki 1011 for high flow. The Sanyo's are very good, not much noise even flat out and they generate a lot of pressure. Trouble is, nigh on impossible to source in the UK.
