*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S4 Thread ***

There would be a heck of a lot more people with Sony and HTC phones if both of them were as good with their marketing/advertising strategy as Apple/Samsung I.e. brain washing! :p

The only reason Samsung are a threat to Apple is due to Samsung copying their marketing strategy etc. Take away that and everything that happened with the court cases etc. and they wouldn't been anywhere as popular as what they are now.

The galaxy phones and iPhones are very good, but they aren't that good

Sorry I'd have to strongly disagree here, we did the "brainwashing" up until 2 years ago Samsung had no real marketing presence, the S1 was a top drawer android phone and pretty much broke android into the mainstream. At that time I saw more advertising for HTC than any other android partner.

But us geeks bought into the specs and abilities of Samsung, as it does that drip fed down through friends and family, I'm probably more responsible for shifting S3's at work than any advert or sales bod in my local mobile outlets.

This snowballed from the S1/S2

I disagree with the above. The HTC Desire was the phone that broke Android into the mainstream.

The S2 was their first great phone, the S1 didn't even have a flash! :p

Until very recently I've not really seem much Samsung advertising and certainly not more than Apple. HTC used to advertise a lot but don't seem to much anymore. The HTC Desire was the first big Android phone, then the SGS2 smashed it!

Most people I know with a Galaxy phone, including myself, have one because they are some of the best smartphones out there, rather than the fact that Samsung advertise a bit.

Samsung advertise more than 'a bit', I assure you. In almost every advert break there is a Note II or Galaxy S III advert.

Many people, such as this forum, carefully consider what phone they need and weigh up the pros and cons, but a large segment of the general public are swept away by advertising.

I don't think Samsung are as good as Apple at marketing yet. The best example of this is that in the Galaxy S III advert they demonstrate some of the more advanced features of the phone where as Apple can make literally anything sound ridiculously good (to the untrained person), from noise cancellation in calls to just taking a regular picture.

Even though Samsung aren't pushing any of their products per se at the MWC, they still have a major presence and are pushing their products hardcore.

The picture below was taken by T3 magazine who attended the show. Apparently as soon as you step off the train that takes you to the MWC you are greeted by the Samsung stand.

Samsung really have got the advertising game down to a tee. Other companies sit up and take note!

I'll give you the desire as the first big android mobile, no the S1 didn't have a flash but in all other areas it kicked the snot out of the desire :)

looking at note 8.0 i can't see samsung moving away from plastic.. :) but they will be on to something, a lot of people will be disappointed because they are expecting a phone that would dominate the world and print 3D 'ladybits' but the reality is that they will simply better a lot of their competition in sound/camera/screen department and leave out the "feel" of the device and still sell loads, plus HTC is crazy dumb to release it a day after s3 announcement.. no one will want HTC when the new 'galaxy' is announced..

Also agree with robbo, the gs 1 wasn't that popular, it ended up selling more than the htc desire etc. The other 2 big android phones were the HTC hero and Desire.

And the GS 1 was technically better, however, back then touchwiz was really bad and Samsung were awful for updates.

The GS 2 was the next "big" thing, it just blew the competition out of the water and was very popular due to just how far ahead it was of everything else.

With the GS 3, it wasn't such a big thing imo and they stepped their marketing/advertising up a xxxx load too and relied on that rather than actually making it a ton loads better than the competition like they did with the gs2.

They have always put a lot of money into marketing.

Also, it isn't just about how many ads are on TV, but other things:

- Samsung's marketing/ads are very much like apple now, they build the hype up perfectly, have their own show for the phone, don't concentrate on talking about the hardware side of things too much (since the majority of average joes won't have a clue about this or/and don't even care about it), more the software side (just like apple)
- everywhere I go, all I see are galaxy note/GS 3 ads and iphone ads, even on TV there are far more ads for them than the HTC phones
- walk into any phone shop and the galaxy and note phones have their wee own stand (some even have a big TV purely to show the phone of.......)just like the iphones, where as all the other phones by htc, sony etc. are bunched together
- all the news sites no longer do their typical android VS iphone articles etc. it is mostly GS 3 VS iphone as if to say that the GS 3 is the only android phone....
- the court cases throughout the last year or 2 between apple and Samsung only benefited Samsung a lot in the end
- Samsung don't release updated models or good mid range and low range phones and they most certainly don't market/advertise them as much as the flagship
- nowhere as much brand awareness/presence as Samsung
- everyone and I mean EVERYONE has a GS 3 or iphone so the majority of people will just get whatever everyone else has due to the popularity

Even if Samsung were to bring the exact same phone as the GS 3 out again but with just a 1080P SAMOLED screen and everything else wasn't as good as the HtC one etc. it would still sell far more devices than either the htc one, xperia Z etc.

Regarding advertising, only ad I remember is the sky diving ad, which I liked :p :o But.........it was only ever for the one X, what about the one S and V and was very rarely on TV????

IMO there are better phones out there that deserve to be more popular i.e.

- one XL
- one X+
- RAZR HD/MAXX

The build quality needs to be vastly better than the s3 for me to get it.

Say what you want about the iphone but its build quality is fantastic

For as all its polycarbonate plasticness the build quality is sound, easy to hold and manipulate and obvious customer appeal, plus it has decent durability when dropped, the design wasn't for me though and I hope the 4 is different but quality is great.

That's a remarkable claim. I didn't believe anyone could afford both a RAZR HD and the amount of crack required to think it's better than an S3. :D

Still, I don't think the S3 was enough of an advance over the S2 to justify upgrading, but there's a good chance I'll upgrade to an S4 when my contract expires next month. It's really not bad for Samsung from a marketing perspective to have their users not feel obliged to upgrade every year; it feels less like they're exploiting their customer base while they're still perceived as cool and more like they want to put out a quality product that improves by inches instead of failing by feet.

Aside from the camera it is a superb phone;

- better chipset overall (s4 krait)
- far better battery life
- more or less stock android
- great audio quality, on par with the one s, GS 3 etc.
- superb build/perceived quality; kevlar and aluminium
- great NLED
- SD slot
- design is rather nice, personally not too fussed on the front though
- 720P SAMOLED screen

Perhaps "better" wasn't the correct word to use :p, but it is definitely as good as the GS 3.

Use of different processors:

According to the Taipei Times, investor group JP Morgan said in a note to clients.....

Similar to its previous Galaxy S3, Samsung is expected to adopt multiple solutions for the application processors and baseband chips in its new Galaxy S4, which will be unveiled in New York on March 14

In addition, the brokerage firm says the US versions of the S4 will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 600, while the rest of the world uses Samsung's own octa-core Exynos 5.

Why do phone makers use different chipsets for different regions? surely it makes more sense to just be able to pump out and identical model with different radio chips depending on the frequencies used.
