I really don't know what to do. Contract is up and I can get an iPhone, but these scuff stories really bother me as I want a black one Guess I could get white but i'm not sure I want a white phone for two years.

I have one tiny scratch which it came with out of the box with. However since getting it i haven't had a case on it and it has no new scratches on it. I do think the aluminium is more durable than people are reporting.

sounds legit i look my my many year old lian li case and see all the chips and scratchs on it....

oh wait i dont it still looks as new as the day it was bought

its like say a drinks can may chip through use......

If you look at my photo, that's not a scratch, a circular chunk has fallen off after extremely light usage. Apple can say what they want but I've never owned a phone that would do this.

Got a black on release day with no marks and have been using it out of the case a lot since and still haven't got any marks or scratches.

Well no, it does. However it depends on how strong the annodisation is. My Lian Li has several scratches all over it but I only have a few specs on my Omnia 7 (Aluminium back) after dropping it onto concrete, no scratches from pocket use.

Didn't HTC have this problem with their One S's at the beginning, lots of soft backs before they sorted it out. Maybe that will be the same with the iPhones, later ones will have a new "formula".

Scratch that. I have a very very very tiny nick at the bottom, at first I thought it was a piece of dust or something.

Possibly of my own doing, who knows.

Not too bothered though, its in a bumper case permanently.

Mines a release day black 64gb, been in a case/sleeve since day 1.

No scratches, but some bits of the anodisation have come off round the joins in the band. Not overly fussed by it, as bit of damage is inevitable.

I agree that a bit of damage is inevitable, but I think the issue is how easily the 'damage' occurs. It might not annoy you now, but a couple of months down the line, will you be happy with this?

How has it got like that though? I've had mine since launch day and only have a couple of barely visible bits where sliver shows though (you really have to look closely).

That looks like it's been in a pocket with keys / loose change to me. Mine always goes in a leather pouch in my pocket and gets kept separate from keys / change.

I'm not sure how the owner has kept the phone (it was a picture on another forum) but I do agree with you, it doesn't look like he was taking much care of it at all.

I'm the same as yourself - I never put it in the same pocket as my keys, and I'm very careful with it, but I still have a few small marks where the black anodised rim has scratched (you do have to look closely to see them).

I guess the point I'm trying to make is I don't think the iPhone 5 will 'age' well. I have my iPhone 4 coming up to 2 years in a few weeks and when I put a new screen protector on the phone, it still looks like the day I got it. I just don't expect that to happen with the iPhone 5.

Not a massive deal, no, but I think they could have done a bit more to make the rim more durable and scratch-resistant - whether it's using a different anodising technique or tempering the metal etc.

Well here, have a read yourself. I don't think he ran his keys up and down it. That would be a little stupid now, wouldn't it? It's two months usage.
