Because the engines don't work the way you think they do. Throttling them is hard (Elon's exact words), igniting all 3 would be too much power, and they may not even have the pressure for all 3 at that point.

They only need 1 engine to land, the 2 engine burn is for the flip and to kill a bit more speed.

Whilst I have no issue with those wanting to learn more by asking "why don't they use 3 rockets?", the answer you gave is probably still too technical for some of those on twitter who, despite only having the IQ of a small satsuma, somehow appear believe that they are smarter than the actual "rocket scientists" :D

In which case can they not start the ignition sequence a bit earlier so they to have enough time to do something about it rather than it having to be perfect and leaving no room for error?

I have no illusion that they are better at what they do than me, but I like to understand the why and how of things like this, so while I'm not talking to a proper rocket scientist I'm gonna ask dumb questions..

Me too, which is why I have zero problems with people like us asking questions.

My post referred to the other group of folks, mainly on Twitter, who aren't asking questions to expand their knowledge but are instead just telling the actual rocket scientists "well just use all 3 rockets dude, it's simple" as if the only reason that hasn't already been done is that the scientists just hadn't thought of it before :D

Nice, I do like a bit of Joe Rogan. I still think colonizing Mars is a bit absurd. Won't it be a real struggle just to survive there, let alone live easily?

Well that's a rarity. They actually failed to land the 1st stage on the drone ship. Looks like it completely missed the target.

Looked like an issue during the re-entry burn to me, they called to stop it pretty early and from then on the first stage telemetry stopped updating.

So Perseverance lands on Mars tonight around 20:55 GMT. Will hopefully be a fantastic achievement with their new 'sky crane' method of trying to gently touch down.

It's going to be a nerve wracking 7 minutes!

I'd like to watch that live. Will it be around 20:55 that we'll know all ok or will there be a signal delay?
