That's completely lacklustre. Looks like it's still a forced "next space" layout for apps. Snap-to-grid is fine, but not allowing me to put in spaces between apps is seriously annoying. Are tehy so stuck in the past?
 
Fair enough, I don't mind using Messages for people who don't use iOS but appreciate a lot of people do. I just want to have one App instead of two, and frankly my main concern is who owns WhatsApp.
There are alternates, but they will never take off.
 
Why have Apple never done that? Made an Android version of Messages? Is it something to do with privacy?
Probably Apple and Google not wanting to play nicely together. It'd be great if they were both integrated like Whatsapp with a similar set of features. I'd get rid of Whatsapp then.
