The Official Xbox 360 FAQ & Sticky thread

Is there a lead you can buy so you don't have to use batteries on 360 controller ? I have seen the play and charge kit but I don't want to spend £15 on that I just want to use my wireless pad wired all the time.

Hi all.
I'm asking this on behalf of my brother, who has a problem with his xbox 360.

The problem is this...
All of a sudden we are getting sound, but no picture, just a black screen.
No red lights show on the console front, everything seems normal in that respect.
I've tried disconnecting everything and re-connecting, no luck.
I've tried using a borrowed set of leads and power supply, but still the same problem.

Does anyone have any idea on what this could be?

Thanks.

Thought i'd post this here rather than make a new thread...

As of the new update you now get a number in your profile denoting how many years you've been on Xbox Live. As of yesterday i had '2' and my sub expired today (should've renewed last night really!).

I got to work, checked my mail and i got an email at 6.21am from MS saying my sub had run out. I got a 12 month code (for £26 ;)) and redeemed it, but for these couple of hours i've been a silver member.

Do any of you know as i've technically gone Gold - Silver - Gold if that number will reset to '1' or if it knows i've redeemed and it's go up to '3'? I'll find out when i get home, i'm just really impatient :D

Hello to one and all I´ve just joined the other day. Looking forward to nosing around the forums but first I kinda have a question already...

A few months ago my 360 froze up as I was playing GTA 4. I didn´t think anything of it because I rebooted. The console and it seemed to be alright but the next day the same thing happened only this time. The screen went black and came up with a E79 error code and told me to get in touch with Microsoft cutting a long story short. I got in touch with Microsoft and they´ve told me that my console is out of warranty and that I´ve gotta pay a cornier service to ship it out to Germany (their repair center for Europe). And pay for the repair and then pay to get it send back...

Anyways the bottom line is I can´t afford to pay out that much money on getting it repaired so is there a way. I can fix this error myself? or get the repair done kinda on the cheap side?

Cheers in Advance

Damn

My launch 360 finally RROD'd today. I rang MS but got quoted £89 to repair it as it was out of warranty and out of the 3yr extended RROD warranty.

So I kindly turned there offer down (A new elite is £139 in Sainsburyso worst case will go for that if below fails).

I have order an xecuter RROD repair kit II (the new one) for £19 with delivery. So I'm waiting for it to arrive (hopefully tommorow)

Has anyone on here tried this and if so have you got any tips not included in the online tutorials.

Cheers

I can report that after a lot of messing around my 360 has been saved and has survived its red ring of death scare. I hight recommend team xecuters RROD Repair Kit 2. It was easy to fit and follow the instructions. Unfortunately mine had an overheat problem after the RROD issue had been repaired - I cleaned off the thermal grease from the gpu and cpu (nail varnish remover/a cloth and some qtips) used some old PC artic silver thermal grease and hey presto all was resolved - tested today on COD MW 2 for 3 hours and all is well. It even sounds a little quieter so it must be running a bit cooler so the fans do not kick into full power :)

If you order the kit from anywhere remember to order the xbox 360 tool to take it appart - I didn't and nearly trashed my case following utubes to open it up without.

Currently mulling buying myself a 360, and I've heard from several different people now that Microsoft have switched production to supposedly "Red Ring of Death" free Xboxes. Is this true, and if so, how does one differntiate between them?

Hi,
Rear of the console, left hand side (looking from behind) - check the sticker on the left. will show power rating and amps too

16.?a - Original version Xenon or Zepher
14.?a - Falcon version
12.?a - Jasper version (newest and coolest running chipset to date)....

No such thing as RROD proof, just these are FAR less likely to get the fault.
If you do get one and it develops the RROD, for god's sake DO NOT try the towel trick, or heat gun or oven bake... your just going to make it a hell of a lot worse!

If you buy one and it gets the fault outside the warranty, find someone with an IR Reflow machine to reflow the BGA under the GPU/CPU depending on the fault.

Hope that kinda helps

When mine broke, I just stuck the label on the box and the guy came to take it away and deliver it for free. Then got it delivered to my house for free.
So in other words, ITS ALL FREE. :)

Few questions if anyone can help.

If I get my 360 repaired, does the console return with a new warranty. If so how long?

Can my old hard drive (elite console) be connected to the new model... I suspect not.

can someone help us out with the above please peeps, I still haven't repaired my 360 and I am considering buy the newer model if I can move my files over easily.

Cheers

You can take your current HDD out of its case (few screws - not hard) and slot it into where the newer 360 drives sit as the connections match the same, it's just that obviously it wont be in the official casing so may wobble around a tad.

Definitely possible though, should be loads of guides on YouTube.
