If it's just the filesize you're having trouble with make sure you're saving it under "Save for web", that compresses it a lot more and I think there's a sliding scale option within it.

Majago, I haven't a clue what to do for yours. When I resize the image, the quality decreases a lot and I can't do much with it.

Nice sig but not too keen on the font, maybe something more simple?

Perhaps even a pattern of somesort in one corner if possible? Like lil squares leading into the pattern for example.
