The ongoing Elon Twitter saga: "insert demographic" melts down

The second largest shareholder Twitter is the Saudi royal family. I'm sure they have lots to say on this matters.
You do know Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz has been a shareholder for a long time (2011) and just rolled his shares over (hence the $1.9B contribution).

He actually initially rejected Musks offer back when Musk first tried to take things over.

Yes but it was a public company then. Now its not and so all the power is with its biggest shareholders and they don't have to answer to anyone. US should never have allowed such regimes to own stock in social media or news outlets. UK shouldn't either.

Probably wasn't a good thing to say. No where near as bad as what Trump came out with numerous times but still not what a president should be saying.

Musk is probably the richest man on Earth, in charge of one of the major social media networks, he's not just Joe you saw this Tuesday. People wielding the power that Musk has should expect to be held to public scrutiny.

Yeah, why not? Its extremely successful in China
Do you realistically see people using twitter like they do with WeChat?

Surely this is similar to Google trying to be Facebook with Google plus.

You can't just replicate a service and expect people to switch across from other platforms to yours.

Twitter tube next, twitter book, why not. Flip it 10 times the value and sell.

It just is hopeful thinking not based on how people do things, especially as WeChat success came with just perfect timing. WeChat couldn't be created today and have the same success.

I agree but I don't think presidents should be getting involved. There are agencies for that and with Musk's contracts with DOD and other government agencies and all his foreign business dealings you would hope eyes are kept on such figures. And that goes for anyone that does large amounts of business with countries that aren't exactly friendly to the US and her allies and also has US government contracts.

If Elon announces that he's going to sell twitter for say 15 billion and accept the loss, who do you think our resident daddy elon fans will blame?

Is it all our fault for not believing enough? Is it out fault for pointing out the flaws in his plan? Perhaps the group that told advertisers to take a look at the reality of what's coming and stand back, which they have said they were already doing, and even twitter corrected Elon's tweet when he suggested otherwise. Will they blame the government, saying the government couldn't allow Elon to have so much power etc.

Will the daddy elon fans ever accept Elon is totally responsible?

I ask as I just totally feel a liz truss situation coming.

Perhaps he'll just announce that he's standing back and passing the running on to someone else, but something surely will come of this.

You would think given his and SpaceX clearance to be putting military sats into space, they would have security vetted him to make sure he's not a risk to national security, although maybe he needs to be revetted as he may have been no risk when vetted but is a risk now

An oldie but...

He can't take that hit, his investors won't take that hit either and would likely sue him The loans will still need to be paid back so he'll have to sell the Tesla stock he put up but that won't cover his loses so he'll have to sell even more stock and that will tank the stock price. He'd probably be looking at getting a class action by Tesla stock holders at that point, if not sooner. Tesla stock price has dropped from $400 in February to $177 at close today. That is a big chuck of his wealth gone. In the last 10 days alone its dropped $50.

He's sold off nearly $20b worth of stock to buy Twitter. That is a lot of tax to pay to the IRS as well.

He's talking about Musk getting directly involved with the Saudi Government. It's ridiculous to me to suggest that the involvement is worthy of public scrutiny but that Musk shouldn't be mentioned by the President. If you're big enough to be dealing with another government; you're big enough to be mentioned by the President.

Its too Trumpy for my liking. He was calling for everyone to be investiagted when he was president and everyone rightly called him out on it. He should have punted the question as Popehat said further down the thread.

I think it would have been a better answer had he not named Musk, but I don't agree that this is remotely similar to Trump. The behaviour of these oligarchs absolutely should be subject to scrutiny from elected officials up to and including the President. Doubly so when we're talking about an oligarch co-operating with a foreign dictatorship.
