The original Unreal game

-The third level has a fabulous set piece I remember to this day... you walk down a corridor, only to find your way blocked. Then suddenly the lights start clicking off one-by-one, so you backtrack the way you came to stay in the light. But your way back has been sealed also. All the lights are off. You hear a roar and chuck down a couple of flares as panic starts to set in. Then out steps your first ever Skaarj to fight from a cubbyhole. Genius.

That part was fantastic! :D

Probably my fave FPS. I wish they'd make a new one, but keep the same kind of scale and level design.

Works great still, replayed it all in 1080p only a few months back on the dx10 renderer.

Just gave it a whirl and there was still serious slow down with the software renderer. Is it possible to get it to work using 3dfx Glide, PowerVR works but only in a teeny weeny window and is massively sped up.

Go to www.oldunreal.com they have updated patches that are still signed off by epic which allow it to run in directx or opengl. Also find some S3TC texture packs there, though they are largish downloads.

To stop massive speed on modern gfx force vsync in the driver and I also think there is an ini tweek to fix it at whetever you want too.

Still a superb game should be given a HD remaster by Epic on the latest UT3 engine with improved DX11 & HDR features. 39 levels so a massive game by today's standards in 1998 this was by far the best looking PC game in the world.

I have never played this game, I'm a big fan of all the UT games.

Do you think I should give this a shot? I don't mind if its ugly by todays standards which I expect it is.

Do you think I could enjoy playing it if its my first time.

Do it. Maybe apply some patches first. Check out some screen shots comparisons before deciding whether to mod it or not.

Remember the first unreal, the fly into the castle intro I think across the bridge was truly epic, jaw dropping visuals fantastic game to play... Didn't grip me as much as Quake but it made good use of my system back in the day.

Considering what we got back then, and what we get today, seems like its all gone a bit stale, however it was fairly new tech back then and ground breaking. We still get games that makes your jaw drop, just look at Crysis 2 however unreal was the first of many, and yeah still a jaw dropping game when you consider what we was all running back when it was released..

Pentium 200MMX anyone? Or a 3Dfx voodoo card?? lol

Remember to disable the speed stepping or amd cool n quiet in the BIOS to solve the random speeding up problem.

Awesome game and on a related note you guys should dig out unreal tournament 1999 and have a blast online! Still plenty of servers :)

I remember wandering around in the church then hearing screams and lights going out then there suddenly guts everywhere and that made me **** some bricks :D

I just loved the first level, so much atmosphere, the screams, the flickering lights, the computer voice over the tannoy, the air-vent filled with pulsing green mist :D

Sooooooo good!

Hi,

Ok - So I installed it, and would like to patch up to see it with the updated renderer.

After I copied the files from his .zip into the unreal\system directory, I get an error from the advanced options in the game about d3dx10_43.dll being missing.

I guess this is something to do with directx.
What I dont get is though - my PC must have directx11 on it already. For playing metro2033 etc. How come unreal and this renderer is out of date?

Should I just install directx from the link in the guys website?
Or will it break my other games?

Ta.

Yey. Thanks - it's working.

And its brilliant.
Best game I've played in ages. I'm glad I've forgotten it - so its like playing it for the first time all over again.

Lovin it.

Totally agree, the graphics, loved the skies, and a room early on in the game where you glided across the floor was awesome, and the sounds and music created a really absorbing experience.
I put Unreal above HL,by far,as i also preferred SIN over HL too.
Epic memories,haha.
