The Pascal GTX 1070 Owners Thread

With the amount of Extremes added to the list recently, it's looking like that £50 MSI Gaming premium is starting to benefit Zotac now that the pricing isn't being gouged as much on the Extreme.

Indeed. I would have much preferred the MSI Gaming if I am honest, but I wasn't going to pay loads more for it.

The Amp Extreme is just fine although I still think the cooler on my MSI 980 Gaming, the twin frozr, was better simply because the fans turning on/off was silent and unnoticeable unlike with the amp extreme (ie the revving and slight solenoid type click when they go on and off). This can be easily fixed with a custom fan curve though and having the fans come on at ~34% at about 50 degrees . The fans are pretty much inaudible once on and you don't need a higher fan percentage than that to keep it cool...andit does seem to run things extremely cool - even in this really hot weather I haven't seen it go much above 60 degrees

I think MSI dropped the ball by making theirs more expensive. It has made a lot of people go elsewhere ( Zotac and Palit for example). As they are such bonkers prices to start with and extra £40/£50 just wasn't on.

Despite being very pleased with the Gaming X in general, this was the card I really wanted all along, and since they're finally available I couldn't resist.

I have a Dell Aurora R4 and going round in circles trying to decide on an FE or an open air cooler, the machine originally came with a pair of AMD 6950's with the reference cooler packed into a fairly tight space under a shroud. There's a couple of pictures showing the internal bays here:

http://www.hardwareheaven.com/2012/02/alienware-aurora-r4-gaming-desktop-review/4/

There is a small fan which sits underneath the graphics cards as well as additional fans for the HDD and memory areas however I think with it being quite a tight area under the shroud that an FE card with the reference blower is the way to go. Clearly the general preference is open air coolers though hence coming round in circles.

Has anyone else noticed poor optimisation with Nvidia supported features in games? For example I've noticed PCSS shadows in GTA V kills the framerate to as low as 30fps in certain parts of the game, whereas using the 'softest' shadows option it maintains an almost constant 60fps 1440p/max settings. Likewise the Nvidia soft shadows option in Far Cry 4 absolutely humps the framerate and it runs absolutely fine without it.

Is this likely to be sorted with future driver updates or is it a software issue with the games themselves?

It's an issue with GameWorks in general really. Its effects look nice, but have a large impact on performance. That's not likely to change, since they're aimed at people with high end systems. In GTA V specifically though, the AMD CHS shadows have just as large a performance penalty attached. Neither look good enough to justify it IMO. First thing I'd turn off if I was struggling for performance, swiftly followed by Ultra grass.

Odd thing is I remember them operating without too much issue on the GTX 770 at 1080p. I'm not that bothered to be honest, shadows at ultra or equivalent are almost as good.

To get on the Roll of Honour all you have to do is post a pic with your user name on it of your GTX 1070.

How does the FTW compare to the Gaming X?
Very similar in terms of acoustics and temperatures, which is to say inaudible and around 70 degrees max. Overclocking too, but then they all are. Although my particular Gaming X was a dud in terms of memory overclocking and wouldn't even do 9GHz stable, whereas this one does. I do like the design of the card itself a lot more too. The RGB lighting on the front looks very impressive... not that I have a windowed case to really see it often. Overall very pleased with it, but then I was with the Gaming X as well. No real reason to choose one over the other beyond aesthetic concerns (and maybe EVGA's warranty, although my experience with MSI's RMA was great when I used it).

So at the minute I have an MSI 970 4G but I have that fan issue where either one or none spin up at times resulting in my temps slowly rising. I am going to RMA it because why wouldn't I. However I also need my pc for uni work so I can't go without a card while I wait for it to be returned. I am considering just buying a 1070 and selling the 970 when I get it back. I will probably avoid the MSI branded ones because I discovered that not only with the 970 but previous ones they also had fan issues so that has put me off a little.
There isn't any real difference between most of these cards is there, other than the third party cooling they all have? I have had gigabyte cards in the past and the windforce was always great on those. It seems the 1070 will still be a nice enough upgrade over the 970 once I factor in selling off the new 970. I had a palit card in the past and than ran warmer then I would have liked at the time due to what seemed like just bad cooling on it.

Stuck the EVGA SC in my SG07. Loooong card but the case was fine with that, in fact it appreciated it being narrower than my MSI 660. Almost heartache putting it in: there is this little attachment on the back of the case that secures the graphics card, for some reason it doesn't align with the 1070! Luckily, I managed to see there was another way to screw it directly to the case. Bit of a gap now there isn't this little metal grille there but that's ok.

Noted my MOBO was sagging a bit, I think that is thanks to being a bit brutal with the card in the past.

Anyway, I went straight into Fallout 4 and turned everything to max, previously it was dialled down and ran not to dissimilar to going through Fallout 3 on 360. Now it's just breezy! I assume it was running quite quietly in my confined case but I had two overclocked children at full load outputting at high decibels.

Just a heads up on the Zotac 1070 Amp Extreme. Just got mine and its boosting to 2025 out of the box without touching anything. My mates just bought one and he's getting just under 2 Ghz. Pretty impressive against the advertised specs.

No coil whine

No,not really. some of the higher factory overclocked ones with two connectors and massive coolers tend to boost a bit higher out of the box (My amp extreme does 2000-2025ghz out of the box and most seem to do around that), but it seems most will overclock to that anyway, and much over 2.1ghz on the core seems to be the ceiling.

I would just go with a balance of the cheapest/best cooler ( and warranty if you intend to keep it for a while).

I only went for the AMP extreme because it was the cheapest pre overclocked custom cooled card available at the time ( not from here)
