You can force it to run at constant clock speed and voltage on every P State using watman.
You can disable Power Efficiency or use Wattman.
Can I get some opinions on whether it's worth upgrading from a 7970?
Absolutely, it's a lil beast. I got the 4GB model, it's so cheap for the performance you are getting. Do it !
Very tempting! Just weighing up whether to go for a more powerful single card as X-Plane can't take advantage of SLI/X-Fire
Getting some GPU down clocking in Planetary Annihilation, goes down as low as 500Mhz. Weird because games like Crysis 3 don't down-clock. Is there a way to stop down-clocking?
I've tried em all. I honestly wouldn't bother, RX480 is the sweet spot. Go for the 4GB model as well. At the current price there is nothing better bang for buck.
What are your fan settings? You will need to up the maximum to stop it hitting 85+ degrees and throttling, you also probably need to up the power target.
I currently run this:
*edit* not sure on img rules? Just change to hyperlinks if its a problem!
Have you had any issues with thermals? Looking at Anandtech it doesn't seem to be as impressive as promised on heat and power compared to the 970.
Temps are fine, Been testing with Crysis 3 and Planetary Annihilation and temps are good ~75c I imagine there isn't much room on the stock cooler for overclocking temp wise, unless you pump up the fan speed. I'm running at stock, it's all good.
Yes the 480 is worth getting, but buy a custom cooled card like the sapphire nitro, rather than the ref card.
I don't have those options, just a monitoring graph. Weird...

Some people have been getting 1300-1350 with a nice undervolt of 1.090V. You can also lower the volts on the ram at the same time which helps.
Some people getting 0.650-0.800 stable at stock frequency.
Got mine under custom water AIO now. Temps are so good, 32c - 35c Crysis 3 stress testing.
IDLE 28c (with dual monitors)
LOAD 32C - 35C

Universal GPU only block I assume?
