The Polaris RX 480 Owners Thread.

Anyone tried MGS V on a 480 at 1440p? How did it play?
While I haven't tried it, I think it's pretty easy to look at how existing cards were handling it and extrapolate where a 480 would be.

On max settings, a 390 averages 48fps with a maximum drop to 37fps. 390X literally only 2-3 frames better.

It's a game where Nvidia cards tend to do a fair bit better, although the trend with the 480 was that in these sorts of titles, the 480 seems to fare better relative to the 390/390X than in titles where AMD cards were already strong.

So let's look at the 970, averaging 51fps and minimum 43fps. Seems to me that as long as you dont mind turning some settings down, you could probably hit a reasonably consistent 60fps with only occasional drops. MGSV has some pretty demanding settings.

- Turning down Ambient Occlusion from Extra High to High should gain 3-5fps without any major hit to visual quality.

- Effects Extra High setting is a killer. While it does add a few niceties, it's probably well worth turning down to High if you need the performance, as it means a good 10fps+.

- Turning off Volumetric Clouds can give up to 5-7fps improvement, which is well worth doing if you need the performance. It does not add all that much visually.

- Post Processing is something I'd ideally only reduce from Extra High to High as a last resort, as it adds quite a bit over High, but if you do, it can mean another 5-7fps+. And quite a bit more if dropped to Low(next setting down from High).

All in all, 1440p/60fps should be quite doable.

Thanks. That seems to be the thought for a lot of games at 1440p with a 480. Turning down a few settings isn't really an issue for me as I only have as 60Hz monitor.

In case the power thread was TLDR I created a diagram of the issues with the reference PCB.

Great. I'll see what AMD comes up with today but it looks like it may have to go back to OCUK. Don't feel sorry for AMD (what were they thinking?), but do for OCUK.

Not sure what card I'll get as a replacement. #Annoyed

I'm not sure I'd use MGSV as representative of 'most games'. At least not modern games. It's something that runs at 60fps on consoles, dont forget. So hitting 1440p/60fps with it will be easier than it will most games that only run 30fps on consoles.

I'd be hesitant to use a 480 for 1440p if 60fps was a priority, speaking generally.

I run DOOM at high settings @ 1440p at over 60fps on a R9 290X with a 27" freesync monitor without any issues "just saying"

I really wanted to like this card but due to the massive headache of getting games to run has killed my enthusiasm. Looking around I can see I am not alone either and I am genuinely gutted. I have requested to DSR it and I will sit this GPU out.
Ditto. It sounded great, but it's crashed multiple times on both of my PCs.
Think I will be returning this and picking up a 1060 or 970 if the 1060 is a little expensive.

Edit: Now I'm trying to work out if my problem might just be being caused by a faulty displayport to DVI cable.

The RX480 only has one HDMI port, and 3x Displayports.
So I've had to use the HDMI port to go to the TV, and a Displayport to DVI cable for the monitor (it's a few years old so has no displayport).

The signal is going during games, but also during light work (using Office) and having to reboot the PC.
Will be trying just using the HDMI cable to the monitor and see if the same issue arises.

I've edited my post since someone has drawn it into question.

Getting some GPU down clocking in Planetary Annihilation, goes down as low as 500Mhz. Weird because games like Crysis 3 don't down-clock. Is there a way to stop down-clocking?

You can force it to run at constant clock speed and voltage on every P State using watman.

So is it worth getting this card? Seems to be lot of issues but since I bought a free sync monitor I don't particularly want to go with NVIDIA.
Currently have 280x so haven't even used free sync.

Yes the 480 is worth getting, but buy a custom cooled card like the sapphire nitro, rather than the ref card.
