The Polaris RX 480 Owners Thread.

That is strange. I thought the strix cooler was good from the reviews I read. If you get chance to swap it I can highly recommend the gtr. At stock it barely spins the fans at all and only gets about 64-65c under full load on mine.

Well after doing a bit of retweaking of the case i guess i must admit i was a bit to quick to say airflow is fine. I guess i was just thinking since my old 1070 ran cool and quite that the rx 480 wouldnt need more air than that (the 1070) did. I guess i was wrong.

Ive removed the 2 enermax fans pulling air in and replaced them with non-pwm fans from noctua SP-12s in push config instead and everything seems hunkydory now. No need for custom fan control anymire.. card doesnt seems to go over 68-69 on auto and that is after the temp target has been set to 75 in wattman.

So there we have it. I was being a bonehead :) The strix actually seems to be fairly cool card though still not as cool nor quiet as i would have liked considering heatsink size w/ 3 fans, but way better than before.

that is interesting. glad to hear you sorted it anyway.

haven't got round to reading through this thread, so not sure if this has been answered before, but looking to maybe picking one of these up as an early xmas pressie for myself.

been doing a tiny bit of research, and discovered that there was/is a problem with the card bottle-necking when using a 6 pin power connector vs the 8 pin variant. just want to know if there is any truth in this before i purchase one.

Basically all 'good' (so non-reference) 480's have 8-pin power. I think only reference cards are 6-pin, and they are noisy and thermal throttle easily. I would imagine the 6-pin cards would be throttling more due to temperature than to power. However, there was some debate when the reference cards launched that the 6-pin was inadequate for power delivery and that there was a risk that the PCI slot (where additional power came from) could be overloaded and break. This was later proved to be incorrect and largely a non-issue.

If you're wanting to pick up a fantastic deal on a 480 8GB, get:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...ress-graphics-card-20-cashback-gx-32j-ms.html

It comes with a 20% cashback, so drops down to a very good price. Also, the card itself is one of the best cards noise and temperature wise. You can save even more money if you were to sell the Civ 6 key + BF1 deluxe upgrade (which both come free with the card).

Just got my MSI card yesterday.. first impressions are good. Miles ahead in both heat and noise to my Sapphire RX480, though i do prefer the Sapphire aesthetics.
Will be putting it through its paces, but the idle temps are sitting at 28C and fans hardly spun up at all during a Time Spy run. Very different from my experience with the Nitro+.

Looking at a few more reports on the Gigabyte card, ive been seeing that they tend to like running hot, dont want to be keeping an eye on my temps all the time so now looking at the XFX designed card, so far that looks like the top contender for my money.

I moved up to a MSI RX480 from the same GPU (Shappire in my case) with the same CPU, and it's definitely is big boost.

Good to see somebody with a similar spec PC seeing good gains, my only concern at the moment is whether my motherboard will like it.

Same with the XFX ones.

A few manufacturers seem to be using a "revised" design with much lower power requirements. I can run my XFX GTR at just over 1v :)

Received my MSI 480 today, just installed it (after using DDU) and all seems to be good! Have to go out shortly but will give it a good test this evening. What are the recommended programs for messing with the OC and such? I have an older version of MSI afterburner installed, would it be wise to update this and keep using it or are there better alternatives?

Cool, thanks! I noticed that my temps were snaking their way up to 52 on idle, is this regular/normal?

Edit: After sorting a fan curve i've got it sitting at a much more reasonable 38!

Ran into a bit of an issue, which seems to be fairly regular looking at the internets, i cannot set my refresh rate to 144hz. On my 7950 this was possible, but after installing the 480 yday i cannot set it.

In the radeon additional settings my monitor is reported as 144hz, but when trying to set it as a custom resolution an error pops up saying my display is incompatible. I'm using a dual link dvi which, as stated, worked fine on the 7950 from what i recall. Do i need to splurge on a DP 1.2 cable?

Thanks.

another question, before I push the buy button on this card,

If i was to buy the XFX 8gb version of this card, do you think it will play nicely with my system, or will i run into problems. ideally i just want something i can just plug and play, not really interested in overclocking yet. I understand that this question cant be answered with 100% certainty, but i would appreciate some of you guys educated opinions

I have a similar system to you, and am currently enjoying my MSI 480!

Your motherboard and CPU is fine. The only component that i could see with potential to cause problems is the PSU. It is more than big enough to cope with the power demands, but depending on quality may cause the card to be noisy when in use (known as coil whine).

I thought i should add my 2 cents, i got a Sapphire Rx480 Nitro+, 4gb model last week and have it running at 1370/2000 using wattman, and its running great.
I initially started with Afterburner but found the latest version unstable/odd acting, so removed it and gave wattman a whirl and have not looked back.

When i first installed it, with the latest Afterburner, i ran it stock and tested it with heaven and 3dmark etc, and saw it was throttling, so i reduced the Core till it was hitting and holding the stock boost of 1306... and it took -66mv to do so... this prompted me to start overclocking and led to Wattman.
A cracking card, though a little noisy at full load, but only a low "woosh" noise, so not an issue for me.
