The Polaris RX 480 Owners Thread.

Best based on what exactly ? Long story why I would never buy XFX again , bad taste with RMA. I'm tempted to give the Asus one a go if I don't get the Sapphire Nitro. Circa £30 difference , the Sapphire has higher boost , but can be sorted by a bit of oc'ing , also the lights can be modded on the Nitro
The cooler is objectively lower performance and louder from every single review i have seen and read and they dont overclock as well in general. The pcb is worse as well. The only thing the sapphire has going for it really is the very good warranty service, RGB and its small size. For some reason the xfx seems to draw less power to the core than many of the other cards as well.

The asus is very good, but the stock tim is very bad and you do need a lot of airflow to prevent it recycling its own air and getting very hot.

As for RMA i have RMA'ed with XFX, asus and msi. Asus are terrible, but i suppose with ocuk you get good service as they deal with it in house. MSI are a bit hit and miss i have to say, but it has been a while since i rma anything with them. XFX took there time, but they did sort me out in the end, but with the rx480 gtr i really cant see this card dying, as it is a lot higher quality than there previous hd7xxx and r9 2xx series cards. I think there new swappable fans will also cut their rma numbers maybe making it a better experience for the few than have issues with the card itself?

I have had 10 sapphire gpu's myself, so i know they can make a good card, but i feel there 390x nitro and rx480 nitro have not really been up to their usual very high standard as have been surpassed by brands less well known for making solid cards.

Anyone have any feedback on the Asus dual coolers? Tempted to upgrade my blower 7950 because of the noise, but the few user reviews I can find state they're also pretty noisy at load, in which case I might as well just keep plodding on and wait til Squadron 42 is released before upgrading.

It can get quite loud at full load, although I've only just received it and I'm simply doing default setup benches. I have no idea what difference altering the fan curve makes, or how this compares to a 7950.

On a side note, I previously had an nvidia card, which had a fps overlay option incorporated within their control panel settings. With AMD, is the only option external software like Afterburner?

Ive got a 600W EVGA and it runs the card fine. To be honest tho id try your 500W, chances are it will be plenty.

I'm still using a 9 year old Corsair 520w and no issues. That's with a 480 and overclocked 6700k. I actually put it back in because my 700w Seasonic has annoying coil whine and is out of warranty :/

I've got my 8GB Asus Dual OC and i'm happy with the performance coming from a 280x. It seems very well matched to my 2560x1080 screen.

I can see that the main game i'm playing at the moment is using 6GB ram with textures maxed (Tomb Raider), and i'm sure the demand on the ram will keep increasing so I think the £30 extra over the 4GB is going to be worth it.

I'm really disappointed in the fan noise levels though. This card is significantly louder than my 280x (which was just a low end dual fax VTX).

Can anyone help here, i'm considering sending it back it's so annoying. Is it just how 480's are?

I did notice the target temperature in WattMan is 65 at default and the card aggressively keeps it below that, using up to 60% fan to do so. Silent Mode is better but the card then only runs at just over 1Ghz then so I feel short changed.

Is the answer to just up the temperature target significantly, and how high should I go?

Just set custom fan profile and increase temperature to 74c.

I removed the stock fans from my XFX 480 and mounted 2 120mm ones to the stock heatsink (almost a perfect fit too which covers the whole heatsink). The fans at 90% are silent and it cools the card better. They should do that from the factory IMO :p

Gibbo has said that when it comes to XFX OCUK will deal with warranty issues going forwards, this was why OCUK started stocking XFX cards again.

Here is the thread

Hi there

After months of discussion OcUK and XFX have come to a special agreement which in short means the following for customers buying from OcUK:

  • 48hr Advanced RMA swap out service by OcUK
  • Removal of stock cooler allowed
  • 2 year warranty with OcUK

I have to disagree a lot here, my XFX 480 GTR Black edition stays in 50s for gaming, extreme cases reaches 62c and as you know fans don't even turn on until 60c so 90% of time fans are not even on, even when they are on are quiet, in your case I would look at case cooling. Bottom line XFX 480 runs very cool in general.

I've got the XFX GTR XXX version, I think I've only heard the fans twice & that was on a restart.
Highest temp' I've seen so far was 65 & that was after several (far too many hehe) hours of DOOM play.

So last week my 7950 went bang and with it lots of smoke. Looking to replace it with a 480 until Vega comes out. At the moment I'm making do with onboard graphics.

Couple of questions.. what card would people recommend and is there a significant difference in performance between the 4 and 8 gig models?

I bought the 8gb Nitro+ OC, purely because 8 is more than 4 and i knew that if I ended up buying the 4gb version, I'd end up regretting it. And a B grade came up at a good price at the right time.

Can anyone with the Asus Dual OC tell me if they get anywhere near the 1.3 ghz core clock speed? Out of the box, in fire-strike for example (but also in games), i'm consistently getting less than 1.1 ghz.

I need to up the power target massively just to get the advertised core clock. Is this normal?

It's seems like the XFX GTR XXX (which i know is much more expensive) can peg a reliable 1266 mhz with no dips at stock.

Would be interested to know how other peoples cards behave at stock.
