The Police Application Thread

I've got my name down for a Taser course. I can't do it until I'm confirmed in rank though. Seems like there us a few more courses opening up here too though, which is good. They've relaxed some of the rules of who can carry too, previously it was response officers only, now NPT can carry.

So, back in 2011 ACPO decided that taser could not be carried by probationers or specials. The reasons were poor at best.

A few months back the NPCC have revisited this decision and referred it to the CoP for guidance, so I think the chances of specials and probationers being able to carry are pretty good. There is certainly a reasonable amount of support from the NPCC.

We have that too. I have a smartcard for certain types of mobile terminal logons, it also has a RFID chip for door entry, but neither of them are hard to fake and not all Warrant Cards have smartcard chips.

We did have a few vehicles that required you to tap your warrant card to start, but the feedback from officers wasn't very positive so they stopped it.

My warrant card has the rfid chip and opens most premises/gates for me. It also accesses the photocopier where I can pull print jobs from and printer.

For the cars we have a 'Dallas key' which should like the one barmen have to activate a till.

I attended the briefing last night, all as expected really, ID checks and a presentation going into more detail about the whole process. I've got the assessment centre on 12th April, so I've got a few weeks to prepare which is good.

What a day! I was exhausted afterwards.

It was up at the Essex Police College in Chelmsford for some reason, and as I had to be there at 7.45am I decided to not risk the drive in the morning and stay at a Premier Inn the night before.

There's a few parts of the day that I know I messed up, specifically the written tests and half of the interview. Everything else I feel like I did OK, but I guess there's no point trying to second guess, I just have to wait and see. Results should be available in a couple of weeks apparently.

If I don't pass I think I'll just call it a day on this dream, after what happened with the Met in 2010 and failing within my first application to Kent 8 months ago.

Fingers crossed!

I just found out I passed the SEARCH assessment centre, just waiting for them to post the results so I know what score I got.

I have to attend a second interview with two senior force assessors and have the medical now. Just waiting for them to give me a date. I need to lose some weight as I'm a little over the BMI limit (embarrasing). Hopefully the interview isn't for another month or so as I should be able to drop quite a bit in that time.

Congrats, and best of luck for the next stages.

I applied for Merseyside Police a few years ago as a Special, passed my interviews but failed on the absence record. As I've now not been off work ill in over 4 years I'm pretty sure I'd be able to do OK this time. Maybe I'll have to look into this again...

Medical and fitness test passed today, fingerprints and DNA swaps taken, and senior officer interview done. I should find out the results tomorrow but it went so well that I'd be amazed if I didn't pass.

Managed to lose 11lbs in the last 2 and a half weeks as well, so was well under the BMI limit and on the path to losing more and getting nice and fit and healthy for hopefully starting in August :D

No such technology up here. Can't speak on behalf of the whole of Scotland but we've just got a key that we use to get access to sites (some divisions have fobs but nothing integrated into our ID cards). Nothing fancy on the vehicles either.

Still on Windows XP too. Police Scotland are hilariously outdated and behind the times when it comes to technology.

Currently just submitting my application, getting it reviewed by two serving officers. Both so far after a quick glimpse while on the phone to them are impressed. Hard to fit so much detailed information into a 70 word limit.

Trying to do all the research I can into the NAC and the tests that have to be completed. If I pass this stage, i'll need to pass an interview with a high ranking officer and a senior HR person at the local HQ, and perform a 5 minute presentation on something I get given 15 minutes before.

Not even passed the application stage but feeling quite nervous about the NAC, so different to my career at the moment ( Civil Engineer ), but a life long ambition that I feel is the right time to be achieved.

Oh and also congrats ScarySquirrel. :D

What's a home visit about? Never heard of them doing that before.. Congrats on getting in though!

Apparently they just pop round for 20 minutes, have a cup of tea and have a chat. I think it's just to make sure you're not living in a squat or crack den, part of the security vetting I guess.

Good luck to those applying and who have got in.

I've not long finished tutoring a lad that was with me for ten weeks.

Were you working on response for this? Get anything interesting or out of the ordinary that he had to deal with?

Thanks dude, and good luck with your application. The interview with a senior officer, at least for me in Kent, was actually nothing to worry about. I just made sure I knew Kent's mission, vision, values and priorities. Most of the questions revolved around those, also integrity was a big topic, as were my own experiences in relation to the core competencies.

I'd highly recommend this book to help you prepare for the assessment centre: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Become-Police-Officer-2016-Version/dp/1909229784
