Andy90, i really like that shot :).

Thanks Mark, its the first shot thats actually got some comments on my Flickr page too - and I'm well pleased with it.

The Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro lens is a cracker when you get the focusing just right, the DoF is tiny though, you can see it run through the left and the right hand petals as a very thin line of sharpness. I think I'm just beginning to understand how the lens handles!

Thought i should add a photo

Taken from my website www.cattani-studios.co.uk

starting off in the world of photos and geting some good shots now and again

Link is broke John But welcome to the forum

Ice Globe - that first shot is ace~ apart from the background fence clutter, that would make a cracking shot! The other 2 are spoilt by the background supporters being 1/2 a body/head.

Yeah second one is the best of the bunch, really liked the way its turned out

How are you getting so close? surely they just fly away if you get to close, or are they dead lol

cheers
lol, they are all alive. at the highest magnification the working distance is about 75mm, which i've never had a problem with yet, as long as you stay low and move towards them very slowly they normally dont mind, if you try from above they fly away or move, this is the case for almost every thing, which is why i spend half my time on my knees. lots of paitents is needed, as even if one stays still for long enough the chances of getting a sharp picture are low, very steady hands is a must.
At the miniumum magnification the working distance is about 300mm, but i dont often shoot at this.

Ah cool, id make it a portraite rather than landscape though.

Are you doing everything right? were you using digital zoom as well? (which it looks like it could be, as that looses quality) cause my s5800 was really really sharp, for example, this is straight off the s5800 (taken last year on holiday) and it hasn't had ANYTHING done to it, straight off the camera

So taking off one MP shouldn't make that much of a difference

I've had a look and I can't rely see any thing that will fix it :(

I feel like selling it now

Going by your topic today (which i think is where this discussion should be) you've only got the camera a few hours ago and in your excitement you've started taking pictures without understanding the basics of whats involved. Have a play around with the camera. find out what it can do. change some of the settings. I've had a look on the net and I've seen example images (cant post link as its to a competitors site) and the images are fine.

I've had it for about 30mins now

and

I've had a look in book but can't see any thing in there

The Quality is set to > 7MN FRAMES

Can pick from

7MF 5
3:2 11
4M 17
2M 28
03m 138

That's just the resolution (7 Megapixel Normal and 7 Megapixel Fine).

That shot was taken in poor lighting at 1/10 second (hence the blurring) and 800ISO (hence the noise).

Here's a random pic I just took with my phone, it's better quality because there was enough light to use 50ISO and a quicker shutter speed.
