Having a play today with my new lightstands... pity the batteries in one of my speedlites have died and no spare in the flat :(

I just had a 5 mintues play with this one in lightroom, C&C welcome but I might have a proper stab at it again in photoshop later.

Stunning!

I tell you now, if I'd hiked up there I'd still be there now!!! :D

edit: Nice panaroma, just had a look at flickr to see what you had done! :)

Some from the Rugby yesterday, Gloucester V Quins:

I had been playing with the micro-adjustment for the lens but I'm not happy with the results. I should've just left it be!!!

Why is Genghis Khan in your flat?... Nice lighting and mood, I like.

Rojin, just wondered about your rugby shots. Have you got permissions to take photos within the stadium? I had to get a press pass sorted out so that I can take them at the football and something which I've remembered about is highlighted in this forum topic on a Scottish Football Forum site.

Albiet the guy involved (15yr old kid) was using a video camera rather than a still camera. Might be something to be aware of.

So yesterday I saw a webpage about making your own lightbox for photography. I didn't have much to do so I thought I'd give it ago.

I was inspired by this post

I made a lightbox a while ago, to take shots of things I sell on ebay.

Here's the box:

click for instructions!

Here's a link to a set of pictures I've done with it

...and I use an a300 too ;)

So thanks Chaz!

Luckily I had most of the materials needed around the house.

Stage one - cut the box out, a window at the top and both sides. The front totally cut away.

Stage two - cover the inside cardboard edges with white paper. This is to reflect the light around the inside of the box and help illuminate the object.

Stage three - cover the windows with greaseproof/tracing paper. This is so the light from your source is softened and nicely diffused onto your object.

Stage four - put a piece of white card curving from the top of the backside to the front of the bottom. This creates and 'infinity curve' so you get the effect of an uninterrupted expanse of white around your object.

Took about 3 hours to put together. You don't have to stick as much of the white paper on the inside, the amount I did compared to just sticking a bit on probably wouldn't make that much difference. It was what took up the most time.

**Sorry for the terrible pictures of the actual box, I majorly couldn't be bothered to take even semi-decent ones, plus the light in my room is awful.**

Still got a lot to learn about lighting and shadows but I think this'll definitely be helpful and I can have some fun with it!

Nice! A little bit more flash power and you're there!

I use a reverse method, dining table with frosted glass insert = excellent!

Thanks :)

I don't actually have a standalone flash at the moment. Too expensive to justify and I don't really know enough about them to make an informed decision about buying one!

I had to make do with my desklight!

I've seen people do it with remote flashes, one at each side....maybe one day :p

You can do it with onboard flash and use the desklight as a modelling light as it is. Just bounce the onboard flash inside the softbox using a piece of card or fashion a dedicated bounce hood (diy sites around) - it's a good thing to check out :)

Funny you should say that, a chief steward came up to me and asked me the purpose of the pictures I was taking. Just for me I said, he was happy with that but commented on "a professional camera" (?!) and that I was following the game a lot with it?!?!! I've taken pictures there for years and never had a problem, even at Twickers.

yeah if the body detaches from the lens then its 'professional' if you were using a point and shoot or camera phone they wouldn't have bothered. But i think the issue is probably more since you had a zoom lens it could be construed that you could sell the images to a paper thus doing a pro photographer out of his livelihood. Providing of course thats all the hassle you'll get then its ok I guess but someone might take offence to it and ask you to stop for future.

Bit of a Llyn (Lake) thing going on today :)

This is a photo of my sister taken around 1985. I scanned the original photo with a cheapo Cannon scanner and did a bit of restoration work in Photoshop:
