optically its stunning. Its just feels a bit cheap compared to the canon L's.

Yeah I know what you mean, the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS isn't much better. They both lack the reassuring "heft" of L glass.

The bottom half is pretty good, but the top right corner lets it down the most. I know why it did that, so next time it'll be better

I like the second one, it's a stereotyped processing style for sure (certainly I'm guilty of its overuse) but it works.

It is slightly but there's not much I could do in the circumstances, I don't like pushing the D200 beyond ISO400 and that was ISO400, 1/25th @ f/1.4 on a 50mm...roll on the D800 so I can upgrade...
