The price of graphics cards will continue to tank and will stay low for at least 2 years - Here's why

With the new gen cards coming out soon I think a lot of people believe it will tank the price of the older cards but I don't see that happening quite how people want.

The new gen will likely soft launch the top end cards carrying the premium price tag. What is likely to happen is we will see price pressure put on 6900xt and 3090 to reduce stock and so that the new cards can slot in above them. The new gen 7600/7700 and 4060/4070 is where the price/performance will be seen but these won't be out until next year so the current mid range cards won't have much of an impetus to drop significantly.

We've had some good price cuts at the start of the month but like the weather pretty dry thus far. I think the next set of price cuts will come the end of this month.

I'd probably grab a 6800 xt if it were below £550 by the end of the month or maybe a 6800 if it were close to £475....trying to balance selling the RX 5700 and getting a good return but I guess everyone is shifting them now (can't see members market due to stupid post count limit).

We've had some good price cuts to overpriced products is how I see it.

I would agree that Nvidia will pad out the launch of Lovelace from top to bottom, the rate of that launch is tricky to predict because sooner or later they need to produce stuff and sell it they can't hold off for too long. What they will have is a set of models based on current inventory, competition from AMD and market research for prices and then simply go for the optimal profit.

What could potentially happen is Nvidia being the main distributor of Lovelace at launch if the AIBs aren't putting the orders in.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a 6800XT, 3080's or higher right now... for the right price.

I don't think that there is any need to hold back now if you want a gpu in the lower mid range. A 2060 for £212 or 6600 for £240 are both good value compared to past gen cards like the 760 or 1060, particularly with the slump in the pound. The 6700 is good value compared to the 5700xt. The Zotac 3060 is down to £320 with 5 year warranty, if you keep it for those 5 years and then buy a newer gen it will cost you £64 a year for a card in warranty during that time. If you have an older power hungry card you will save some of that back in electricity cost

75p per KWH is a joke and that is set to rise again in the near future ?

I am dreading when my fixed contract of 20p per KWH runs out in a year, i thought that was very expensive to be honest.

I'm paying equal to 8p per kWh, I hope that helps. And even I find this expensive tbh because there are places in the world like some U.S states where it as low as 5p per kWh

I am one of those holding... I was gunning for a RX 6700XT and initially I was just waiting for MSRP.
yea I almost bought a 6700xt a 3060ti a few times... unless I see them for like 250 I don't think I would bother.

rather wait and get a 4080 or something

New personal rule: 2X RX590 performance and more RAM at 300€ or less, which means the RX 6700xt is still around 35% above the threshold and it's likely I will have to wait a 7600xt or equivalent.

The RTX 3070 has an MSRP of $499, all apart from the ones with budget coolers are £550+

That's still too high Nvidia, at this stage in their life cycle good ones should be £450, in fact the 3070Ti should be £450, i have no interest in buying overpriced GPU's, Nvidia, i'll wait for the next round and get a 4060 or a 7600XT.

We need to see what this 4070 is going to offer. Some would have you believe that 10% is nothing.

I picked up an Asus Strix 970 for £180 when it went EOL. If you have a working gpu and are prepared to wait you can usually pick up an EOL gpu from a gen (or currently 2) ahead of your current gpu at a good EOL price. So for instance it was possible to go from a 970 to a 2060 for £212, with the 2060 performing very close to the £400+ 1080 from the gen inbetween, https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-founders-edition/33.html

That's how I generally buy my cards. I did pick up a Vega56 for £235 EOL. This gen worked differently, it was possible with luck to trade up, so sell Vega56, use money to buy a 3060ti FE, trade it for a 6800 and have a current gen higher range card.
