The Problem With Serving Sizes

I ahve just finished reading an article on serving sizes in America and how they are misleading, this is something which most people will have noticed e.g. 500ml bottle of Cola is two servings.

The article makes some good points but when it starts out with,

"According to its label, a pint of Häagen-Dazs ice cream contains four servings. But when was the last time you measured out a fourth of a container of Cookies & Cream, then put the rest away for another day?"

What kind of tubbo makes a habit of eating a pint of ice cream on a regular basis?

Any other products with misleading serving sizes? Cooking sprays i hear you say,

"One of the most popular, PAM, boasts zero calories and zero fat on the label of its original canola cooking spray. But that information refers to a spray lasting just a quarter of a second."

Fine, misleading but here is what the pressue group is advocating,

“That’s just not the way people use them,” Mr. Jacobson said. “It’s probably impossible to spray for a third of a second. We suggested six seconds might be kind of reasonable.”

Six seconds, SIX!

Is it just me or have some people lost their common sense in respect of food.

To be honest, serving sizes are always a bit of a joke. Best example I can give that isn't the 500ml bottle of Coke is a brand of Twix knock-offs I get sometimes: A full size one is deemed 2 servings, i.e. 1 finger per serving, but the 'fun size' ones, which are half the size, still claim to be 2 servings.

Having said that, yes, 6 seconds worth of oil spraying is just blurgh.

the only times i've ever used serving suggestions is with spaghetti...

you've also got to remember, there's a lot of 'tards out there that have no clue whatsoever, and need to be told how to do everything

I'm quite confused about what your point is. Are you being critical of the article?

I've never really understood why 500ml bottles say 2 servings on though, like anyone drinks them at half a bottle a time.

some of them are kind of necessary tho, even if you look at them once, like my example

some kids don't get taught about cooking at school either, depending on what subject choices they make so clearly have to rely on being told how much to use.

my ex-girlfriend is 21, she couldn't even make a ****ing pasta bake ffs, this is how bad some of them are these days :D

Nobody said anything about "regular basis". But if I had a container with a pint of ice cream in, I would eat it in a single sitting. I suspect most people would unless they had someone to share it with.

That's a reflection on her as a person being incredibly ignorant, or even stupid rather than cooking itself. Personally, I can't get my head around how people could struggle with things like cooking, but I had one friend who used to butter toast with the tip of a knife, putting holes in to it as he went. It was quite embarrassing to watch, I was completely dumbfounded by it.

Fair enough but you wouldn't need rely on a label to tell you not to do that all the time.

It's a treat, i would argue that most people who buy ice cream would share it or have a scoop or two when they are out and about on a hot day.

1/4 of a pint is a pretty good scoop by anyones standards.

yeah, i do agree it's a direct reflection of her as a person, but then again if you saw her friends who she went to school with try and do anything in the kitchen, you'd wince at the sheer stupidity they displayed.

I had a slice of cake, it was a very thin thing and to my shock it has nearly 900 calories!

I know people who drink 3 or 4 Frijj milkshakes those things will make you obese. They give the nutrition in 100ml instead of the full 500ml it might mislead people.

I don't pay attention to portions, I eat how ever much I want, I am getting there with cooking (I can make a damn good tuna pasta bake and even a lovely roast dinner) and I know how much is too much. For example, I put a small portion on my plate, but for my dad or my boyfriend, I will put nearly twice as much (especially for the bouf, being over a foot taller than me)

I made a cake last week, the Good Food website advised that each slice was 1036 calories. It was damn good though!

My favourite food labelling is the:

**ONLY 100Calories!!** in 1/7th of a slice of this Pizza.
