The Queen doesn't need to have a Driving Licence

Well I guess it depends on the definition of "above the law", I was using it in the sense that the sovereign is immune to prosecution; so while she could be arrested, she could never to taken to court. It would likely end in an abdication I guess.

Why is she immune to prosecution?

Charles I went down for treason.

I once read that The Queen has a driver's licence. How can this be possible? Surely the Sovereign can't licence herself, either directly or through one of her agencies. I understand it's precisely for this reason that she doesn't have a passport. To have one issued in her own name, on her own behalf, is a nonsense. I'd appreciate your clarification.

The Queen does not own a passport, despite making numerous official visits overseas. As you point out, because the British passport is issued in the name of the Sovereign, it is not necessary for The Queen herself to have one.

Although The Queen does not require a driving licence by law, she learned to drive in 1945, while still Princess Elizabeth, as a member of the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She would have required a licence at this time, since she was not the Sovereign and would therefore have been required to hold a driving licence under the existing acts of that time.

In a similar fashion, The Prince of Wales currently requires both a driving license and a passport. On ascending the throne, he would have no legal need for such documents, but he would still nevertheless possess them.

Pretty sure that she would need a driving licence. Isn't the point of the Magna Carta that the law applies to the monarch as well as the people.

She does drive too - mostly a land rover off road from what I believe from such films as "The Queen" - dozy bint broke down in the middle of a stream.

How old is Liz?
IIRC if you were driving before a certain date you didn't need a licence, not to mention the number of "grandfathered" catagories that people can have, that now need separate tests for (i only passed my test 13 years ago and have the trailer, 3,5tonn etc, my dad also has motorbike and i think steam engine).

Anyway IIIRC she learned to drive was a WAFF or something in WW2.

She doesn't need a passport, that's for sure.

Just a coin purse.

"This is me in 1985... this is me in 1999..."

Got a friend who works in the DVLA in Swansea who I SMS'd about an hour ago with the question.

Answer is "Yes" she's on the DVLA records as having a full licence.

Yes but the trial itself was illegal as shown during the case itself as treason is against the monarch so therefore Charles I could never have actually committed treason.

It only went through due to Prides Purges and the removal of a large number of the people in Parliament. Then Cromwell forced them to sign for the execution.
