The Queen's Gambit (Netflix)

Binged this all yesterday. It's a great series, one of my favourite this year for sure. It is very 'Chessy' in places but it needs to be.

Just finished watching it for the second time and it was even better, if that's possible.
Definitely the best show I've seen in years.
:)

This is why I love Netflix. Just out of no where, not advertised, I get to find a great mini series like this.
Is there such a thing as a bad mini series, it's like having a decent show distilled down into a quick great version so I don't have to wait. Love it.

Great series, really loved it.

The lack of wokeness was especially welcome, who would have thought that a show can stand on its own with an incredible actress as the star.

Is there much subtitling in this? Trying to work out when to watch it (ie need to focus 100% on the screen to read)

Excellent mini series. Really enjoyed it and glad OCUK recommended it.
Not only are there some excellent performances but its nice to have an original screenplay that isn't playing it safe when looking for a mass audience.
Watch and enjoy.

My wife and I watched the first episode last night and, frankly, it didn't interest us at all. The main character is rather unlikeable and the story isn't really captivating or new. It's getting rave reviews but we're looking for a reason to bother continuing with it. Does it get better? I mean, a lot better?

I was gripped from the first episode. So maybe this one isn't for you.

Have to say im one of those that was dissapointed by this. It started okay but got a bit boring frankly, the girlfriend was into it more than me but she fell asleep during the finale and isn't bothered about rewatching it.

They picked the time period where chess was at it's most popular and interesting and did very little with it. I was expecting them to use more of the bobby fisher story but nope. reality is far more interesting than the fiction in this case.

Maybe they will have her go a crazy in season 2 or do a rocky 4 against ai but they've already glossed over most of their story arc surely.

on another note if this is your thing you will probably find the docs on Bobby fisher or AlphaGo even better.

Found it quite boring too, i don't think my small mind is made for these types of shows.

Great series, well shot and acted throughout and not too detailed on the specifics of Chess to break your head if you only have a basic knowledge (like myself). Some big names dotted along the way with minor roles.
