The Radeon RX 6900/6950 XT Owners Thread.

Gaming in general, im 42 so pretty much seen it done it. Can't recall the last time I was looking forward to a games release, probably well over a decade ago by this point.

Same here too, I'm 46 next week and gaming just doesn't appeal anymore. Gutted but it is what it is. It's the reason I dropped to a RX580, cashed in on the then GPU and got something that will let me do some 1080p gaming if I want.

I got fed up with Pancake gaming too. Got into VR and haven't looked back. I am 49 now and the majority of my gaming is in VR. It's got me back looking forward to the next VR game release. It's the only reason why I am still buying high tier GPUs, just to improve my PCVR experience.

Although I am without my PC since January waiting for Sapphire to get stock from AMD so they can send out a replacement for my broken 6900XT.

Hey pal.

Unfortunately nothing I ever did could get me good performance in Caldera. I have found through a lot of research that many - if not most - owners of the 6900xt have this same problem with the Caldera map. I have tried everything - the only thing that prevented fps drops was to run everything at Very Low. Believe me, I've tried every possible fix. It's simply an issue of poor optimisation IMO. I don't know how else to explain it.

Fortunately I discovered that Rebirth is 1000x more fun than Caldera. I've literally been grinding Rebirth this entire time. I play it pretty much every day. At 1080p with everything maxed, I average 210fps.

I would suggest playing Rebirth and waiting for WZ 2 to release later this year. I don't know how you feel about it, but Caldera just isn't fun anyway. It's frustrating when you spend a lot of money on one of the best GFX card on the market and can'r get good performance in a BR, but unfortunately that's where we are at. But I get 200+fps consistently in both Multiplayer and Rebirth, so I know my card is fine.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I only play Rebirth to be honest and the performance there is really good like you say. Been messing around on Caldera this weekend just because I've got a new card and want to see if I can get it running well but just can't get the performance to be smooth at all so I think you're right, it's probably just the map and either the game or AMD driver optimisation. Shame really as the peak FPS is definitely higher than my 3080 but the drops are really off putting especially when you're mid-gunfight. Hopefully WZ-2 can bring a better experience for AMD.

Wonder whats taking so long, theyre easy enough to get in store.

Apparently there are two types of Reference cards, at least from Sapphire. One that Sapphire have and one that's supplied by AMD. I don't know what the difference there is, if any. But the upshot is, the model I have isn't from Sapphire, it's from AMD and Sapphire have to wait for AMD to restock them with that model. They are supposed to have stock this week.

Seems like a good thread to ask - is the cost of an upgrade from a 5700XT to 6900XT worthwhile?
What performance improvements can be expected?

My gaming is 1440 or 1080, not 4K.

From what I read the 6800XT performance is somewhere between the 3080 and 3090 nvidia cards?

That's a pretty big upgrade going from a 5700 XT to a 6900 XT, it's more than double the performance so depends if you think that is worthwhile.

@h4wks @Duckwave - I downloaded Warzone last night and I tested it at 1440P all low settings bar a couple of texture settings on high and observed no issues on Windows 10, however it was stuttering a little on Windows 11.

Currently in the process of updating my Windows 11 build as it's a bit out of date, see if that helps. This was on Caldera.

Mmm it's exactly what I did... BUT the worlds changed since... when I bnought my 5700XT is was £297 and it was fantastic really was. PLUS we now have RSR which really does make a difference... I'd say the 6900XT allows me comfrtably to run at 4k gaming BUT you could run 1440P on that 5700XT and use RSR and see what it's pumping out, if you're getting big frames, why not just keep what you have instead of over inflated prices?

However, I'd say my 6900XT is easily twice as fast as the 5700XT!!! However, use the latest AMD Drivers, set to a lower res and see what you think? Am I glad I upgraded... mmmm, 65% yes, it's a gorgeous card BUT DID I NEED IT? WQasn't sure at the time ands now with RSR involved which is a fastnattic piece of tech (well done AMD), I'm not convinced I needed to...

I figured out what the issue was, it was nothing to do with Windows Update. For some reason the game was over allocating video memory, meaning I was seeing I allocation of over 16GB of VRAM, even though the game was told to only use 85% of available VRAM per the config file.

It's just caching it and then over allocating. I edited the config file to 70%, issue resolved. Back to zero stuttering, recorded a whole match on Caldera, 1440P, uploading to the Tubes will share it later.

Nabbed some screenshots, note the video memory usage in the top right hand corner to each screenshot, this was from two separate games of Caldera, it's purely by fluke I have the exact same weapon in each.

1440P - 85% Video Memory Scale

1440P - 70% Video Memory Scale

I also recorded a round with the Video Memory Scale set to 85% and you can see the little stuttering in the frame time graph as the usage climbs beyond 16GB, will upload that also should make for a handy comparison.

Thank you, that's interesting. Yes my Adv options were set at 0.85 but Adrenalin was only reporting 8-9gb Vram usage on the overlay. It's not really micro stutter I'm noticing but pretty big framerate drops from 230 to 150 fps while moving around.

I know people have said tabbing out of the game can cause issues and I'm pretty sure there is a memory leak problem in Warzone. I've got a capture from the weekend I can try and upload tonight showing the performance I'm getting.

Hmm, sounds like a different issue perhaps. I did not get any frame drops in either scenario, but the game did have some minor hitching and stuttering when total usage was up beyond 16GB. Videos are ready, still converting to 1440P quality but can be viewed in 1080P for now.

1440P - Texture Res/Filter and particle quality High, Filmic AAx2, Cache Sun/Spot Shadows on, everything else on low or disabled. Settings shown at start of each video.
VideoMemoryScale 0.7

VideoMemoryScale 0.85

Just to add to the mess that is Warzone Caldera. Here is how the game looked on my 3090 at the same settings/resolution. The textures weren't always rendered properly.

@Kaapstad Updated 6900 XT Toxic picture for the roll of honour please.

Really good price on the Toxic watercooled, and we all know how highly I think of that GPU.

That's the card I was going to buy then I read the reviews talking about the fans being noisy. Looking back it probably would have been a better purchase as it's 3 year warranty vs the paltry 2 with my red devil. :o

Yeah that's because by default it uses the performance BIOS which has a very aggressive fan profile and won't let the fan speed be reduced below 38%. Switch to the second BIOS and the fans are quiet.

Generally the fans are loud at about 50% or so, below 38% they are quiet. YMMV.
