The Real CPU temperature

This has been a question bugging me since ive started monitoring my CPU's temperature. When people say "yeh, while running PRIME95 I get my CPU up to 60degrees". Does that mean that the "CPUTIN" has got to 60degrees, or the 1/2/3/4 cores have an average of 60 degrees centigrade? (CPUTIN was in "HWMonitor", I think it means CPU outside temperature. Again, if you could actually tell me what CPUTIN means, I'd be delighted.) Thanks.

'Accurate' is being used loosely here then

Real temp et al read from a diode designed to control thermal throttling of the chip, and is hardly likely to be reliably calibrated. It is probably sensibly placed, and Intel's thermal guidelines are generally taken to refer to this reading,

Alternatives are taping a thermometer to the outside of the casing, which will always read lower than the core and comes with its own calibration issues, or something based on infra red which is generally impractical. A nicer alternative is to just ignore temperatures, but that's almost heresy in some circles :)
