The real Firefox ?

I'm surprised they see the need for a high altitude/high speed interceptor, considering that the us fleet consists of aircraft operating at normal altitudes with more of a focus on stealth technology. Iirc even the sr71 has been retired and satellites have taken over the role of photo reconnaissance.

well outrunning missiles and having the height advantage is always worth a look in, instead of stealth using speed and height to your advantage for air supremacy.
Would be interesting to see if they can make the engines for such a plane and how long it could maintain its max speed and crucially if it needed to slow down to engage targets, how its performance would be.

Pak 50 looks like really nice aircraft though

Would still be more worried about all the shiny new tactical nukes russia is buying. they have reached parity with the USA again and with newer systems.

Meh russians, if they do they do, all you can do is try and prevent them, they are still the biggest threat to the world.

Pre emptive nuclear strike to wipe Russia off the map.

Russia is just essentially ISIS+Taliban+Al-queeda, world would be better off without them.

Its getting rather annoying that our actions are being challenged around the world.

Apart from how very childish and naive you sound, you do realise that nuclear fallout and radiation clouds don't just stop when they reach an international border, don't you?

What I mean uber is that can a MiG-31 be modified or built upon to exceed mach 4 or would it be a start from scratch project ?

The latest model MiG 29s and SU-27s are indeed superior to early ones but speed wise, they are roughly the same ? Russia's last go at a mach 3+ interceptor (MiG 25 ?) couldn't attain top speed without huge risk of engine damage.

I see what you mean, but looking at it logically, the MiG-25 could do Mach 3.2, the MiG-31 is a much better design however it's limited to Mach 2.83 by it's engines which are more fuel efficient, the airframe itself is capable of greater speed than the MiG-25 hence why it can achieve supersonic flight at much lower altitudes (thicker air).

It is safe to say that the MiG-31 could break Mach 3.5 with the right engines, so an updated/improved one could theoretically be knocking on Mach 4/4+.

And bear in hand that the MiG-31 was built by hand in the 70's/80's, modern construction practices would improve it never-mind a successor.

but we could have a new one based on different parameters.

agreed but there seems to be a limit around these speeds. the US have had a few mach 5/6 test aircraft break up quite spectacularly.

I want a Reaction Engines update! :D
