The real reason behind apparent lack of Mantle devs

EA and DICE have timed exclusivity deal

A lot has been said about Mantle over the last couple of weeks, AMD’s new API has a fair share of supporters, but detractors are not lacking either.

One of the biggest concerns voiced by industry watchers was the apparent lack of support for the new API from leading developers. Sure, DICE and EA are on board, but the rest of the industry didn’t appear to be on board.

There seems to be a very good reason for that. According to Forbes, DICE and EA have a “timed exclusivity agreement from a PR standpoint.” However, AMD told Forbes that several more developers should be announced in November, at AMD’s APU 13 conference.

EA currently has more than 15 Frostbite games in development, with Mantle support. These include big titles like new instalments of NFS, Command and Conquer, Mass Effect and Mirror’s Edge.

AMD is promising “several” new developers at APU 13, but who are they? Are they big or small players? If we were to speculate, we’re place our bets on somewhat bigger developers with a big footprint on the console scene, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

This is why Mantle should really be perceived as "potential performance boost" that is there when it's there, instead of being core part of the performance itself.

Purchase decision should still be based on the hardware spec, performance and price. So for example when buying AMD graphic cards, people should really just take it as it is, and Mantle should be thought of as a free dessert on the house that you were not expecting to get when dining at a restaurant, but be happy if you do get it.

Mantle is an interesting development but its still to early to base purchases on mantle alone I think. AMD have really been impressing me a lot recently though. I've been with NVidia for the last 10 years but I'm really considering the red team for my next upgrade. If they're going to announce new developers next month then the exclusivity deal is a pretty short term arrangement by the sound of it. Nothing to worry about really

The interesting thing is...the most graphic demanding games are generally from EA...and games from other "big" developers such as Ubisoft, the raw grunt of the 290/290 alone without Mantle would most likely be enough to push 80fps+ anyway (with games from Ubisoft it wouldn't be hardware performance I'd worry about, but their "awesome" coding instead :p).

People need to settle down here - AMD cannot monopolise this segment; DirectX is ingrained and established. Similarly, Nvidia cannot be penalised within Mantle, and you can bet your life on them inspecting every facet of the Mantle code to see how it can disadvantage their hardware/drivers.

I have never bought an NVidia card because it has PhysX

I will never buy an AMD card just because it uses Mantle

There things are the icing on the cake.

yep and one of the reasons why people putting off win8 upgrades will probably be forced to do it regardless. cant see anyone taking microshaft down.

i think mantle will yield a small increase . i don't think others will adopt it .

Em...Nvidia will still be using directx; how AMD uses Mantle instead of directx would have no bearing on affecting Nvidia's graphic card performance under directx in anyway. If anything, it would be the quality of Nvidia's own graphic drivers for directx that would affect the performance of their cards the most.

DirectX 11 was never going to support Vista IIRC until hackers ported it, then MS had to roll it out, the same thing will probably happen with 7.

I thought right off the bat that this would be the case. E.A after all...

It's not exactly tragic news in all honesty...Probably went some way to sweeten the deal :).

Mantle is open so Nvidia could in theory make it work on their hardware too. Yes it is designed for AMD so Nvidia's port would be somewhat emulated but there is nothing stopping them doing this. Nvidia also has their own API called NVAPI and they've had this for years. BF3 for example has a few NVAPI calls to help performance on Nvidia hardware. It doesn't use it a lot, not to the extent of BF4 and Mantle, but it is there & DICE have confirmed they'll be using NVAPI in BF4 as well as Mantle.

Neither of them will take over from DX or you'll end up in the same situation you were in back when Glide was released. It ends up worse for everyone when there's not a standard platform and devs know this.
