Go in at an angle and keep going round. A quick sketch in paint as i'm poor at explanations:

Looking at it, this would be the cross section of the banana

The loops are where you'd go out and go back in. When you get all the way round you just pull both ends and the thread would get pulled through and slice it neatly. Might take a bit longer than the way you said though
