The ring

This is one of the few that does it very well.

Why are people so quick to jump on the hate bandwagon just because it's a remake. Not everyone wants to watch subtitled films (I personally love them) but in this case I actually prefer the re-make.

Great film, watch it.

Yup, I actually thought that the Samara/Sadako-revealing climax was far better in the remake.

However, if Ring freaked you out have you seen the original "Kairo" (aka "Pulse")? That one has some serious shadow-play that can have you questioning every corner of your room while lying in bed. Forget the American remake of that one, though - it's an abortion.

Though if you were to put the two a cat fight, I'll go for Sadako all the way. Shes just bigger and a hell of a lot more creepier. Plus unlike Samara, she doesn't have crappy "TV static" special effects which completely ruined it for me in the American remake, although that little teleport thing she did make me jump. But still, its one of the reason why the original Japanese version is more favoured, it didn't need to rely on any fancy CG special effects at all.

And yeah Kairo is another good film to watch. Might be a little slow for some especially when compared to the American remake, but its the themes and questioning of society in that movie which also makes it great. And yeah, after watching it, you may have second thoughts about any dark corner in a room, or if you suddenly have the place all to yourself at a public area or center i.e. like that Arcade Game Center.

Yep, quite a slow movie but even the distorted "Help me..." phone call voices are chilling.

Although it didn't last too long, the apocalyptic stages of the film are masterful. Of all places you'd think "yay!" in an Arcade, but even that was simply off limits here as soon as you see "them" moving about. Such an amazing piece of work.

Even more amazing is the Street Fighter II arcade machine in there :p.

Didn't watch it last night but I think both that and the sequel are great films, first one especially had me scared to bits the first time I watched it

You might be shocked (:p) that I'm with you 100% on this. Every time a foreign film is remade it's automatically rubbish, apparently. Sometimes I think that when people watch foreign films, it makes them feel smug compared to everyone else.

Saw the remake first and it scared the hell out of me, one of the first horror films to really make me feel on edge and genuinely unsettled.

Girlfriend watched this last night whilst I ran upstairs to bed fighting shadows on the way. If you have an active imagination the ring and the grudge are gonna scare you.
