**The Secret World**

It's only when you're looking at general chat you realise just how braindead mmo's have become. There was a guy complaining bitterly that the quest just said "Follow the trail left by Beaumont" and that he had no idea where to go.

The first step of that quest is to examine his documents, which are right beside where the quest starts, and it splashes up a big full-screen colour brochure showing exactly where he was likely to go.

Things have gotten so bad that if there's not a big yellow indicator on your minimap, people's brains just seize up :D

I love the fact they included an ingame browser and actually setup Websites as fake businesses etc but they relate to the game, i wont spoil it for anyone but i used a website to get the answer to a mission i was doing and was pretty much prompted by the game to do so, its brilliant

Had to Google for a quest answer to log into a pc. Enjoying the game some really new quests and ideas been thrown in. Played all major mmos and have to say funcom have surprised me with this, much improved from the beta which I actually didn't like. There's plenty to improve on but it's a good launch.

Is there a way to save deck builds? It would be useful to be able to switch between aoe and single target builds quickly.

Yep. Press 'C', go to gear management or profiles or something. I can't remember what it's called exactly (not that you'd be able to tell ;)) but the option is on there. It'll save all your skills and gear you have one and then you can swap it around and load up a new profile and save, et viola, two differing profiles!

Excellent, cheers :)

I'm starting to see a flaw in the google for information thing. I had to find out the name of a guy's wife last night, and thought to myself, in reality I'd just look him up on facebook or something. Sure enough, Funcom had a fake corporate profile set up for him on the web, but it was already on page 2 of a google search, below all the guides and forum posts on how to do the quest, and Google's auto preview had the name splashed all over the place :(

On the plus side, just got to the academy on the savage coast. That Usher woman has some of the best lines in the game so far :D

Where are the best prices for this at the moment? Can only find it for 49.99€. Do you need Origin to play?

I got my key from CJS keys for £26. Registered with Funcom direct no problem, and you don't need Origin, despite what the CJS site says.

They have a well dodgy repupation here mind you, (just ask any Guild Wars 2 pre-purchaser) but in this instance I got away without hassle :)

Best MMO I have ever played. It really sets the bar for story driven content. This is how SWTOR should have done it, not just adding cut-scenes to already stale quest mechanics.

I have been looking for a MMO for awhile and this does look promising based on what players have been posting. Recently I have tried a few MMO trials only to be disappointed. How is the world design, does it feel unique and interesting and is there much to explore. Also how is the game regarding features which is something Conan lacked.

I don't know if I should wait for the price to drop as £39 plus a pricey monthly subscription is a bit too much.

I'll admit I'd pay £20 in a sale for the game and probably subscribe maybe on and off for about 1 in every 3 months just to get a feel and mix it up with all the other mmos I play on rotation. I wonder if it will be in a sale this Summer like Rift and Tera and Age of Conan were so early on with some bonus bits bundled. I think I'd much prefer it on Steam though.

Here are some of my initial thoughts and concerns regarding this game. Note: This is not gonna be an anti-Funcom "AoC was **** and so is this" post. This will be my thoughts and concerns from playing it for around 6 hours.

I bought this yesterday and downloaded it over night. I started playing this morning with fairly low expectations, but the game has impressed me. The visuals, the setting, the audio and the general game atmosphere are all very appealing. So far, the storyline has been compelling and interesting and I want to keep playing to see what happens next. The questing is a nice change from the normal wall of text quests that the majority of MMOs give you, and although the quests may not be on the same level as SW:TOR when it comes to cut scene quality, they are great nonetheless.

One of the main features that is most intriguing to me is the no levels and no set classes systems, but I am not sure if that will work out to be a fantastic idea or terrible mistake. I haven't looked into it much, but from what I can tell there is no limit to the amount of skill points you can gain and assign, and no limit to the amount of skill trees you can assign those points to. If that is correct, that means that players will be able to max out every skill possible. That would give long term players a distinct advantage over newer players, and would no doubt cause balance major issues in PvP and PvE.

That brings me quite nicely onto the next thing that concerns me - PvE content. In Rift or SW:TOR, for example, you need to be level 50 to begin raiding. How is TSW going to gauge your eligibility to enter raids if there is no level cap? That also applies to PvP. For example, in most MMOs, there are different brackets for PvP matches such as 10-19 and 51-60. How will TSW match people up in PvP matches? If some newer players only have 10 skill points, and other more established players have 100 skill points, the latter will simply annihilate the former.

As it stands currently, this is still a game that I am very interested in playing and getting more into as time goes on, but some of the features that are most interesting are also the ones causing the most concern for me. I haven't really looked into this very much, so there may be a cap on the amount of skill points you can earn, but I haven't read anything about that being the case.

There's no cap on skill points - you can get every skill in the game if you play long enough. Thing is, you're still limited to 7 active and 7 passive skills at any one time, so it's more that you can switch and change for more roles as you progress. At the moment I've just got two deck sets, one for AoE DPS and one for single target, but I could see a long time player having a load of them, for healing, crowd control, tanking etc. It just means you're not pidgeonholed when it comes to grouping the more advanced you are.

I haven't tried PvPing yet, I presume your stats are bumped to level 50, so your only restriction is what skill decks you can bring to bear, and the quality level of your various bits of jewellery.

Ive found running in DX 9 makes the game run better, well for me at least.

The game relies heavily on loading textures on the fly which can occasional make the game stutter a tad, Fallout 3 and Oblivion were similar with the way the game loaded textures, ive very sensitive to this, other are not and dont notice at all.

For some reason running in DX 11 causes more performance issues than DX9 for me, DX9 runs super smooth where DX 11 not so much, though it makes sense really as running in DX 11 will have tons more textures and shadows to load.

Dont get me wrong DX 11 doesn't play terrible, DX9 just runs better for me.

I bought and installed the game last night, only had about an hour to play and I must say it looks good. Quite different from the other MMOs which makes it look more complicated, at least in the beginning.
My question to you guys is about framerate. I'm running the game in 1920x1200, Ultra details, DX11 and I get 35-45 fps (in the starting zones obviously). I expected it to run at 60fps (Vsync ON) ... might be my "outdated" hardware... what do you guys think ? Can anyone with an Ivybridge/GTX6xx series provide some feedback on the framerate ?

Cheers

Did you read my post above? lol

Turn down lighting and word detail in running DX 11 big FPS killers

SSAO and tessellation also drop FPS

Effects details also drops frames a lot when on max when fighting mobos try dropping that a tad

Your hardware is hardly outdated and is still very high end! and you DO NOT need to upgrade your CPU, what you have is still superb and more than enough for any game on the market.

Around Kingsmouth some areas new a bit more optimization as the game does in general, dont forget there are no official optimized drivers from either team yet, so the game can only better performance wise.

As i said above DX9 runs a lot a better for me, prob because there are less shadows and lighting with DX9.

Thanks for the input mate (I have read your post above, I just wanted a bit more details).

I will try running it in DX9 when I get home, see how big the difference is. I just wanted to play the game at its best. But yes, it's a new game and it's probably not fully optimized yet (and the drives, as you said).
Will probably clock the graphic card a bit (haven't tried yet) to see if there's a substantial framerate increase.

OT: Anyone knows a good fun english-speaking guild ?
