The Smiths

So how can a mediocre band that doesn't fill the venues of bigger bands be the best band ever?

More to the point, how can a Manchester band that isn't in the top 3 bands from Manchester be the best band ever?

Wasn't saying they were the best band ever - I like The Smiths, wouldn't class them as 'best band ever' at all myself.

Mearly pointing out they are that niche band that would sell out a medium sized venue in a heartbeat, but probably wouldn't in somewhere bigger.

And I think The Smiths would be lost in a place like the MEN personally, wouldn't sound right at all.

You seemed to be making a point against dmpoole's that's all. Some are claiming that the Smiths are the best band ever when they blatantly are not. They were long-running enough to be massive and simply never stepped up to that mark.

You couldn't mention them in the same breath as the Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones, Oasis, Cream, not when talking about best band. You could even argue that Pink Floyd are better than the Smiths!

I agree to an extent - I mean there is a lot of subjectivity but in terms of scale of tours, influence etc they are not in the same league of some of the bands listed above.

I was mearly pointing out there were in that "middle ground" between small gigs and large gigs, you get a lot of bands like that, which are sort of underground huge (My Bloody Valentine, for example, or Sonic Youth, or The Jesus and Mary Chain) but would never fill (or even sound good) in a stadium.

God, how many brackets? I want all Angus-Higgins!

I know very little of Pink Floyd other than it's not bad as a bit of background music. I can't imagine staying awake at a gig though.

Oasis - Never saw the appeal. They were what I call a football band, ie: The same braindead sectors of society who follow football like sheep following Bo Peep, were Oasis fans simply because they didn't have the depth to go beyond the obvious.

Rolling Stones - Seen them live. They were good, but not really my cup of tea.

Led Zeppelin - Now you're talking!

The Smiths ushered in a new scene in music, it was called Indie and it spawned the Stone Roses, Charlatans, Happy Mondays, Cast, Elastica, Oasis, Blur, The Verve, etc, etc. Everything you enjoyed about the Indie scene in the 90's was inspired by Morrissey and Marr.

FAC 51 & New Order were more important than M&M.

I too think you are wrong, sorry.
Put it this way even before the reunion last year, you would find a reference or mention to Led Zeppelin in just about every music magazine. These days, after the reunion they are mentioned in every magazine at least once.
Could the same be said for The Smiths, or any other band mentioned above?
Okay, the music media is a pos these days and do latch on to trends to sell their wares, but still, all throughout the 80's and 90's the music media was not as bad as it is now, but they still mentioned LZ almost every issue.

Even if you were right it still wouldn't automatically make them the best band, good does not equal influential or vice versa.

And I'm not keen on The Smiths particularly, decent enough but not great. Same goes for The Stone Roses, I've tried listening to them quite a lot and the most they inspire in me is a general feeling of "s'ok" but that is about it.

My ears never got on with The Smiths, I found 'The Queen is Dead' to be a pretty boring album, and I havn't bothered trying anything else of theirs since *shrug*.

why does the best band ever have to fill out big venues. the majority of people like really bad music anyway. I think the smiths would be my second 'Manchester band' just after the fall.

ps didn't morrissey fill out a stadium for his 'who put the m in manchester gig' anyway ? maybe not i can't remember

What a load of tosh.

(Looks up at DVD collection to see who still fills Stadiums) :

ACDC
Aerosmith
Bruce Springsteen
Eagles
Metallica
Queen (with half a band)
Rammstein
Rolling Stones
Rush
The Who
U2

Sorry, you don't have a point.

That argument reads like "The majority are wrong in their opinion, the best can only be those which the majority do not like". Which of course is silly.

That's exactly what it does say :)

No idea, Morrissey is rubbish anyway. He was OK in The Smiths but wasn't great even then. Even Ian Brown is a better vocalist.

New Order put Manchester on the map in terms of music. There's no arguing it.

Pink Floyd= Best band this country has ever produced. They pwn everyone from Britain and possibly the world.
They make The Stone Roses look like a bunch of 10 year old mute indie girls

The Smiths have been offered obscene amounts of money to reform. If they did (which they won't) they wouldn't tour mid sized arenas, they'd easily sell out the largest of venues.

They divide people but their influence is massive. People who just don't 'get' them call them crap. Or miserable. But their influence is greater than any other Manchester band and they're certainly one of the top 5 most influential British bands ever.

They got offered £1 Million to play Cochella one year.
