The Smiths

On reflection I have heard of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant but I had to jog my memory to link them to Led Zeppelin. But I could couldn't even give you the initials of anyone else in the band. Basically I'm using your argument that having anonymous members in a band precludes them from being great, since I could say the same thing about Led Zep. Clearly you're into Led Zep and I'm into The Smiths but it doesn't mean band is any more significant than the other cos their drummer is a nobody.

Not saying you have to know who someone is for them to be any good but do you think people listen to the Smiths and think wow, there's a good drummer or mmm, nice bassline. Nope, didn't think so. But even people who were not that into Zep's brand of music would usually acknowledge that they were seriously talented musicians. I'm not saying the Smiths were rubbish, just want a real sense of proportion.

PS. Must have been the first time ever Bonzo's drumming has been described as anonymous.:D

If you take "not that into" and move it down to "not really bothered about at all, could probably only name Stairway to Heavan as a Led Zep song", that's where I'm at and I have to say I can't acknowledge whether they are good or not. I know they have a reputation but I simply don't go out of my way to listen to them. Sorry. Probably before my time anyway and muscial tastes differ and all that.

I take it this Bonzo geezer was in Led Zepelin? :D

Yes, he was the drummer. And they were a bit before my time as well...didn't stumble across their stuff until about 10 years ago.

And no-ones mentioned one of the greatest manchester bands yet, The Buzzcocks!

After 25 years I can still listen to a Joy Division / New Order album from start to finish and feel a million emotions throughout.

25 seconds after The Smiths and I just wanna switch it off and doing something else.

Utter crap then, utter crap now.

why do people rave over this band?

No idea.

Don't get me wrong The Stone Roses produced one of the defining albums of the decate in The Stone Roses (an album I love and listen to regularly), but everything the did was much of a muchness.

The Smiths would make my top ten (probably top 5 with The Rolling Stones and David Bowie interchanging at one and two); The Stone Roses would make my top twenty, maybe nine or ten.

Yeah, how dare he have an opinion

its fair enough having an opinion. but to say they are one of the worst bands in history.. thats just a stupid comment.

he might not like them, but he cant say they are one of the worst bands in history when its totally clear its not

dont know why you need the confused smiley, nothing confusing about it.

a decent opinion would be "i hate the smiths.. their songs never appealed to me at all"

not "i hate the ******* smiths, on of the worst bands in history"

thats an opinion.. but its a totally crap one
