Well I'm back *waves*.

I've been messing around with CandyBar etc getting everything set up the way I want it.
All looking and feeling good here. Nothing ground breaking but I wasn't expecting it to be. It's just 'nice' and it's good to have a clean install. Everything is feeling very snappy.

What system do you have mate out of interest? Also what software do you have on it so far?

Also have though about candybar for a while but is it worth it. How much better you manage to get your layout?

I'm quite please with Snow Leopard TBH ...

I'm planning to by the missus a Macbook Pro next week, will it automatically come with Snow Leopard or do I have to pay the £8 for it to be delivered?

I like Candybar for the easy of icon swapping. Some apps can be a bit tricky and it manages it nice and easily. Plus it's a handy place to keep icon collections rather than keep grubbing around in folders.

Where do you guys get icons and stuff from to go into candybar then? Wonder whether I to start a new thread for this so people can show what they have done with candybar?

Hey mate,

I'm running a 17" MacBookPro 3,1. - 2.6 C2D with 4GB of RAM.

So far the only software I've got on here is the default stuff, Quicksilver, 1Password, Betterzip and Candybar.

I'm going to get the likes of iLife, iWorks and Creative Suite on here (probably tomorrow now) but the very next thing I'm going to do is copy my iTunes library off my Time Capsule and it's going to take a while.

RE: CandyBar - it's very good at what it does. To be honest I only use it at times like this (because I have a set of icons that I love and don't want to change). However, it's still very useful even if it's not very often. I'd definitely say it was worth getting though.

Right, I'm a little bit confused about the 64bit kernel.

I've done a ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi test and it's telling me i've got the EFI64.

However, I try holding down 4+6 on start-up and system profile still says:
64-bit Kernel and Extensions: No

I've tried chaning the Boot.plist to 64bit and that hasn't worked either.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

It's because your computer isn't capable of 64bit, or has a 32bit efi?

I did watch a video that says only the unibody's were 64bit but i may be wrong.

Is nobody else suffering from choppy Spaces and other animations then ? Seems to be a few people having the same issue around the interwebs

You have the same problem every MBP 3,1 owner has (including me).

CPU = 64 bit.
Chipset = 64 bit.
EFI = 64 bit
But apple decided that the 3,1 wasn't on the supported list (starts with 4,1).

You're stuck with a 32 bit kernel unless Apple decide otherwise.

There's a strong possibility that your QT isn't accelerated either (I think the 8600M GT doesn't get the H.264 acceleration).

Right. I'm back in business after my clean install. All pretty easy. Just tweaking the visuals a bit now... Think I'm going to go to the flat black dock as since you guys mentioned the odd looking right click menus I can't get over the clash! Damn you!

Ah maybe that's it then. I've got 64bit EFI but something else is missing to run it. No worries really - it's still running nicely.

They're nothing fancy but here's a screen-grab of CandyBar with them all.

It's a set called Alumi by Joy Vincent, it doesn't have every icon but it's got most of the ones I need.

The last two aren't part of the set, they are just randoms I found.

ok here goes with instructions......

go to system/library/CoreServices

find Dock (right click) show package contents

contents/Resources

now find the 4 files

scurve-l.png
scurve-m.png
scurve-sm.png
scurve-xl.png

make a backup of these files then open them with preview.

in preview go to tools/adjust colour

at the top you see the colour curve, (spiky graph thing) drag the black arrow on the left all the way to the right (there's a white arrow there)

(you should see the picture turn black and gray.

save this file and do it for the other three.

restart the dock

and Robert's your mothers brother!

Just trying to do this, and it seems I can't save changes to these files... I assume this is because they are system files, and I need to change permissions. Is that right? How should I go about doing that?
