Why is everyone doing a fresh install?

I just got my iMac 3 weeks ago, and wondering if i need to do that.....and i am worried about my photos on there which might be lost ! lol Is Time Machine THAT good? How do i check it has backed up my photos?

If your mac is only 3 weeks old, it's probably not worth the bother.

In answer to your other question - yes, Time Machine is e-mazing.com If you told it to back up your drive then yes, your pics are safe. To check, open your photos folder, then select "enter time machine" from the little icon at the top. You can scroll back through time. Note that this is not so impressive if you use iphoto as all you'll see is the iphoto blob of data!

Not had any issues with doing an upgrade on a 3 week old MBP. So far most of my apps are working perfectly fine and TM is just continuing to do its backups as normal.

OK then boys and girls, how do I persuade a fresh installation to give me the correct drivers for an old HP LaserJet 4000N which worked properly under Leopard? SL is only offering me a generic Postscript driver or a HP LJ4.

Hrm, i've noticed that it's a lot faster to unsleep now, wonder if they've fixed the Safari memory leak if you leave a window open?

There's been quite a lot of discussion on this. It seams that SL attempts to automatically configure with the specific printer name and doesn't allow manual override.

I had some problems with my printer. I had to resort to printing off of my old 17" MBP. It found the driver but just failed to download it...

I even opted for all printers drivers to be installed.

Thanks for the replies. The stuttering I am getting in animations is down to Vsync. Wondered if I could increase my refresh to sort it out. There's got to be a setting somewhere that changed in the upgrade to Snow Leopard. It was fine before.

Has anyone had their disks from the £25 set delivered today?

Not here for the next few days and left today free to get on with sorting out my MP and MBP.

Grrr Apple.

Other issues i've found:

Under Leopard my 2006 Core Duo MacBook's fan would stay silent (1500RPM with the CPU at 60c) under general usage (well, unless Flash was being used  ). Under Snow Leopard the CPU seems to get slightly hotter and so my fan will randomly come on.

Quicktime appears to be generally not as good as it should be. Quicktime X has no option to automatically start playing video and both X and 7 (I have both installed as I have a Quicktime 7 Pro license) now are choppy on an HD video whereas before it was nice and smooth.

Really not trying to be too complaining :p

So are you all booting into 64bit and noticing a difference or standard 32bit?

I know people are saying its quicker but if I reinstalled Leopard I'm sure I would think my MP has doubled in speed as it's been getting slower for a good few months!
