The Snowsports Thread 2014-15

Have you been to Japan before and is ten days worth it/doable? I've always wanted to ski in Japan but have been put off by the travel time and the thought of losing 2 or 3 days. Hakuba looks like it gets an enormous amount of snow and the terrain looks interesting but is Niseko the safer choice?
I've been thinking about Japan recently, going to try and head over there in 2016.

Ok... That's Scotland? Srsly? Lived in UK for a few years and had no idea there was a ski resort in Scotland.

Price? Location? Moar info please. Worth going?

I'll probably be going to Switzerland or somewhere this season depending on where has some good offers on. But that's a lot of snow in Scotland :D

There's 5 ski resorts in Scotland: nevis range, cairngorm, lecht, glencoe, glenshee.

Check http://ski.visitscotland.com
I'm pretty sure there's a lot more snow in the photo than it looks as well. The front tower in the photo is about 4-5 metres tall so i think the half buried digger must be sitting on top of at least 1 metre of snow.

I was boarding in April last year! Then mountain biking in shorts and tee only a half hour drive away the following weekend :D

I miss the highlands. :(

I was going to post a season thread over the next few days as we've just bought our seasons pass to the Grand Massif. 2500+km of pisted area, 1hr30 in the car.

We're going to take advantage of my relocation and plan on skiing pretty much every weekend, and won't stick exclusively to the GM, it's just that the season pass is half price if bought before end of October, so only €450 which is significantly cheaper than the 3 valleys season pass (which we'd prefer) at €1,215.

And with 10 days in the dolomites in February, it's going to be a good season .

Platypus! I just booked a week at Grand Massif in Feb! As you have been there what are you tips/advice for us! I cannot wait as it looks like the snow over there the past 2 years has been impressive.

So the first snows of winter are starting to fall and some of the higher resorts will start to open in the next few weeks. What's everyone got planned for this season?

Me, possibly an early week in Europe somewhere to be decided and then 2 and a bit weeks out in Colorado. Looking forward to it!

I wonder if Scotland will have another season like last year:-

Where in Scotland is this? I would never have guessed that could be in Scotland!

Just to check a quick straw poll, is £1k for flights, transfers, accommodation, food, ski pass, and boot and ski hire reasonable for Les Menuires, Three Valleys or is that the higher end of costs and can get cheaper deals for decent accommodation?

I'm not looking to go to the very best resort, especially since half of the group has never skiied before, but the person organising the group holiday is a ski pro and I'm worried he's picking the most expensive places/resort.

If this is regarding your last post about 14 people going then I would say you can get a much better price for that. It also depends on where in france you are going. Somewhere like Tignes will be pricey.

I am skiing in Flaine (France) and there are 3 of us. Got 4* appartments, passes, equipment, flights, transfers all for £750. If you have got 14 people you could get a right deal out of that. Shop around and take your time.

Thought so. Did the apartments include food? This comes with three meals a day cooked for us. I suppose food costs add up.

This was for self catering. I went to Andorra last year which is one of the cheapest places to go. 3* Hotel, Half Board, Ski passes + Lunch on the slopes, flights, transfers and equipment for £460pp. Depending on where in France you go I would say you could get a chalet with catering around £800-£900.

One thing to keep in mind is unless you are staying somewhere that you can ski to door, you will need to come off the slopes every time you have lunch. If you go half board you get breakfast and dinner then go to restaurants on the slopes.

As previously said, you could get better deals for less. Just a quick look here you can get half board accommodation including a weeks lift pass for £439 based on just 2 people. If you went self catering then considerably less.

Just booked my first ski holiday, going to Meribel staying self catering apartments, total cost including 3 valleys ski pass £950.

Looking to have a couple of 1 to 1 lessons at a ski dome will this be the best way to learn? Any other suggestions?

Cheers

Got a week at La Plagne with UCPA first week in Jan, first trip in 7 years. Absolutely cannot wait.

Now where did I leave that Arc'teryx code......

I paid for my mate to do the learn to ski in a day at Milton Keynes snozone for his birthday a month ago and he was pretty impressed. He could ski by the end of the day but this is 7 hours of skiing. He did however say he feels he could have learnt more had they let him but if he tried straightening his skis up a little bit they said to stop it. This is do not agree with as I think it is not fair on the person skiing.

I would recommend it if you are looking to get it out of the way but if you are not in a rush take them step by step as you will probably save money on unnecessary teaching as you will pick it up yourself.

A week in March to Tignes was booked this morning. Catered chalet with the extended family. It's the first whole week I'll have done in 4 years so it should be good! Did 2 days in Lake Louise in 11/12, 1 day in Romania in 12/13 and 3 days in Germany in 13/14. Nothing to hectic though so i'm going to make the most of the big/technical runs this year. :D

I'm also going to see how fast/skilled my 11 year old cousin is... Hopefully I'll teach him a thing or two... ;)

Interesting thread, if I wanted to go snowboarding for 4-7 days with the Mrs, how much would it cost? (I'd like a half decent place to stay and not too much travel to the ski lifts etc) Also any time of year that's cheaper, late Jan/Feb?

I'm not too bothered on where to go, but preferably more beginner type stuff (I've had lessons, can link my turns etc and go on the highest inclines in snow domes but don't think that means much.)

Also having restaurants nearby and stuff would be cool. Thanks guys all advice welcomed. (book early or minute also? What websites to use?)

Because of the bargains package holidays are it's usually cheaper to go for a week than a long weekend, unless the "long weekend" is Monday to Thursday. January will probably be cheaper than February but not by much (just avoid half term).

If you wait until a couple of weeks before you plan to go and see what deals are available. You can usually get somewhere nicer for cheaper (but obviously less choice) and you can see where the snow is best.

Where to go? It really won't matter too much for a beginner. If you want the more pretty scenery then somewhere in Austria would be a good bet. Scheffau is nice, pretty and lots of gentle tree lined slopes. The only problem is it's not really a ski in ski out location (which will usually be in the purpose built high rise monstrosities). Andorra or somewhere like Slovakia/Bulgaria are cheap(er) although the last time I went to Bulgaria it was about the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall... Andorra was nice when I went (but about 15 years ago) so worth waiting to see if others have been more recently... Otherwise, most of the resorts in France, Austria and Italy will cater for your needs easily, just a case of looking and seeing which you like the look of (and what deals are available).
